Great start for Impi

Oh, if only pre-season results meant anything…. this past weekend, the UKZN Impi Varsity Shield side pulled a real rabbit out of the hat in beating Varsity Cup champions Shimlas, 24-19, away from home!

Details are very sketchy at this stage and we really don’t know too much about how the Impi is looking this year. After winning the Shield under Ryan Strudwick last year (in a non-promotion year) there where fears that 2016 would be a bad year, with Strudwick’s elevation to the senior Sharks coaching ranks. Fortunately, there will again be continuity and a strong Sharks presence in the coaching ranks this season, with Michael Horak seemingly appointed head coach of the team for the Shield campaign. He will then take charge of the Currie Cup Qualifying team before moving on to under 21s later in the year.

This year’s Varsity competitions will see stricter eligibility restrictions and Impi are apparently still trying to figure out which of their squad qualify to play in the competition proper. Saturday’s starting line-up, though, seems to be a good one and if most of those players are indeed available, there could be some hope. Eight of the team are contracted Sharks juniors, with promising young flyhalf Curwin Bosch sure to be a key player for Impi in 2016.

The Impi starting team for the friendly was:
1. John-Hubert Meyer
2. Mikyle Webster
3. Ntando Mpofana
4. Rikus Zwart
5. Jean Droste
6. Kerron Van Vuuren
7. Zwela Zondi
8. Michael Meyer
9. Langa Shange
10. Curwin Bosch
11. Thobekani Buthelezi
12. Alwyno Visagie
13. Tristan Blewett
14. Shayne Makombe
15. Morne Joubert

  • Good result…wonder what shape the Shimlas are in for this year though as well. Looks a pretty decent side though…hope there is some depth. Wonder where that Glenwood winger is though…he did sign for the Sharks as far as i am aware. Name escapes me but he is a tall, very quick black guy. Made College look like u14s at Kings park in the game on tv

  • @SheldonK (Comment 2) : if it is Ilunga Mukendi of whom you speak, then I believe he’s at the Academy. Not all the boys are going to play Varsity Shield. There are Academic requirements.

  • @robdylan (Comment 4) : Yeh thats the kid. I figured that would be the possible reason why. Again it has to be asked whether the Sharks are doing everything possible to aide the Impi and get the best guys playing. I do understand Academic difficulties though…

  • @JD (Comment 9) : Ive got a sneaky suspicion that he is a much better coach than we gave him credit for.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 10) : that’s what I think as well. A good coach does not become bad because of one bad season!!!!!!!!!!!

  • A bit worrying that admin doesn’t know who qualifies to play and who not? It must make preparations a bit tricky. Is that our own Admin’s fault or does it have to do with the Varsity? Or Varsity Cup organisers?

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 8) : The whole Horak “saga” finally showed me how little I know about rugby.

The guy seems to shine on his own, with his team being the only one in 2015 to keep any semblance of pride in the Sharks tank….this after his supposed failure as defense and kicking coach.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 16) : yes just shows nobody is all bad and sometimes they can’t perform not because they’re bad but because of the situation they’re in!!!

  • @pastorshark (Comment 15) : To be honest its the actual players/students as well as the qualifying criteria for which courses make you eligible. So those players that are very poor academically are the ones they try fit into courses but obviously the Varsity itself has rules about who qualifies for the course. It is trickier than it seems.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 16) : The environment, player resources, and players buying into your ideas are major parts of coaching. I just think that perhaps he can relate and get his ideas across to the youngsters better than he can with the top pros…just a thought

  • @SheldonK (Comment 20) : @vanmartin (Comment 21) : maybe with the Cheetahs being a younger group of players he had more success there than last year at the Sharks?!?!?!

  • Also really good to see they are not throwing Curwin Bosch into the deep end just yet, a lot of development needs to happen with him. Unparalleled talent, but he needs to finds his feet a little lower in the ranks!

I assume Inny Radebe will be Lambie’s back up or will they deploy Joe as Lambie’s deputy, personally hope it will be the former, I’m quite excited to see Inny get a chance
