Sharks players JC Astle and Lukhanyo Am will both represent the Kings in Super Rugby this year, having secured loan agreements with the Eastern Cape franchise.

As we reported earlier this month, Am and hooker Monde Hadebe were both released from the Sharks Super Rugby training squad to try out with the Kings. 22-year-old Am has impressed Deon Davids enough to secure a spot in the squad, while Hadebe has returned to Durban for rehab after picking up a back injury. It’s not clear whether the latter will return to the Kings once the problem has cleared up.

Astle, meanwhile, is one of a number of contracted players deemed surplus to requirements in Durban, so it’s encouraging that the Kings have seen value in his services.

Other players added to the Kings squad on loan include former Sharks centre-cum-wing Luzuko Vulindlu (now with SWD) and Pumas flanker Chris Cloete. Lock Taz Fuzani and hooker Martin Farreira have signed contracts for the 2016 campaign.

  • birdy tells me Lukhanyo Am is a bloody fantastic player and we’re stupid not to be using him ourselves.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : not too many options at 13 in the sharks squad.does this mean jpp or sithole to play 13?

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : only 3 props in the kings squad.would be nice if one of the sharks loosehead props can get an invite and selection.chadwick or one of the u21s,potgieter or majola.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Not quite proven himself at senior level, but he was bloody fantastic for Border in the junior ranks.

I think he’ll do well for us, I wish I could tell you how he’s developed in recent times, but I can’t, didn’t watch him all of last year. Last I watched him was 2014

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Nice oke as well, not much of a talker, very reserved lad!

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Well at least he will get some chance to develop and kings might benefit. Sharks should think about structuring a deal with kings so we don’t permanently lose talent.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 8) : he’s only on loan so will come back after Super rugby.

  • @JD (Comment 9) : Ja but it’s better than losing them. If we could only allow them to get exposure keep in form and still manage to keep them in SA. A deal with Kings could accomplish that. Let them play SR for kings and come back to sharks for CC while we rotate many of our SR players in the CC to prevent burnout and long term injuries.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 10) : 100% correct!!! Great for the players and the Sharks.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Ive never seen the guy play so cant comment too much but if he is on our books and just loaned out then its a great way for him to gain serious exposure which may definitely aide us in the CC and Super rugby next year. Im assuming JP Pieterson and Jordaan will cover the 13 channel with Sithole the emergency cover.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 12) : I still think I’d prefer Sithole at 13. JPP just doesn’t give me confidence when he’s at 13.

  • @StevieS (Comment 13) : Im curious why Sithole considering the amount of time he has played there and the amount of time JPP has now spent in that position?

  • Comment 14, posted at 25.01.16 11:06:46 by SheldonK Reply

  • @SheldonK (Comment 14) : He looked sharper on defence when he was there and seemed to ask more questions of the defence.

  • Seeing as Astle was one of the guys we wanted to let go, will this be a loan agreement with him still on our books…or does he sign a contract with the Kings and leave us?

  • @StevieS (Comment 15) : hmm i still have big doubt about him there but i do know he has some good qualities to play there

  • @SheldonK (Comment 14) : re: long-term planning for the team and player, the sharks should have persisted with sithole at 13.

  • jordaan is a potential match winner at 13 on attack running from broken play.needs work on his handling skills and defence.has the pace and stepping skills.

  • Comment 19, posted at 25.01.16 13:11:55 by 50shadesofshark Reply

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 18) : Was a tough one to call as he looked like a wing playing at centre…the things he did is what you want your wing to do. Think they were happy to use as an alternative but not the number 1

  • Comment 20, posted at 25.01.16 13:16:50 by SheldonK Reply

  • Letting am go to the kings on loan, seems to indicate it will be jpp and jordaan at 13.with both able to play wing.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 22) : To be honest Ludik was a good 15 although i did like him on the wing a bit. Dont think id play him at 13. I still think Esterhuizen would be a good 13

  • Comment 24, posted at 25.01.16 13:54:09 by SheldonK Reply

  • @pastorshark (Comment 23) : 13

  • Comment 25, posted at 26.01.16 11:12:30 by 50shadesofshark Reply

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 21) : also keep on forgetting about mjekevu.will he be used on the wing or 13?or is he seen as an option at both?would like to see the sharks use him in one position.don’t think he must be shifted between wing and centre.

  • Comment 26, posted at 26.01.16 11:16:29 by 50shadesofshark Reply

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 26) : he must play wing. Think he wants to play centre though

  • Comment 27, posted at 26.01.16 11:26:58 by SheldonK Reply

  • @SheldonK (Comment 24): will be interesing to see who the sharks play at 13 this season.options imo: jordaan, jpp, sithole, mjekevu.

  • Comment 28, posted at 26.01.16 11:29:00 by 50shadesofshark Reply

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 28) : JPP will be the first choice i reckon followed by Jordaan. The Mjekevu and Sithole. At 12 will be Esterhuizen, Williams and Louw
