Our man Benedict caught up with Ulsterman Louis Ludik for a chat.

How are you Louis, how has the season been?
The season has been up and down, I’m struggling with my groin at the moment; that’s a bit frustrating. However, it’s going well thanks. We just didn’t make the playoffs in the Champions Cup but in the league we are doing well so far.

You have signed a year extension to your contract to stay at Ulster. How are you enjoying the life there?
I’m really enjoying life over here. The club is amazing. The people are extremely friendly and helpful. They are some of the most grounded people I’ve ever met. The weather can be challenging at times, but with all the other positives we can overlook it.

Do you harbour any ambitions to aim for Rugby World Cup 2019 with Ireland?
At the moment I am just focused on playing my best for Ulster. If God has an Irish cap in store for me, I would be very honoured and grateful. I still have to play another season before I can be in available to play for them so it’s a long time away.

690 was a pretty special number last week. These are the number of minutes you had played in the Pro12. The most by any player. Opta says you are yet to miss a tackle too. (40/40). What has been the secret? You must be enjoying your rugby?
I think they got the tackle number wrong, I missed two tackles this season so far. I am however enjoying the rugby a lot. The style we are trying to play is brilliant. We are trying to give the ball a bit of air and to express ourselves.

Who has been your toughest opponent this season?
The toughest team would definitely be Saracens. They are very physical and play an intense game.

I am sure you keep an eye on your old team the Sharks now and again. What do you think of the talent coming through and their prospects for the season?
I love watching the Sharks play and what they are doing. They did well with the recruitment of Willie le Roux, Joe Pietersen and some of the forwards. They have a lot more depth this year and it will be very exciting to see. It’s also great to see the du Preez brothers are doing so well along with Garth April.

How is fatherhood treating you? Have you mastered the art of changing diapers and keeping the little man quiet when he cries?
Yes. Having a child is one of the best thing can happen to a person. I absolutely love it and love spending time with him. We are blessed with a very healthy and beautiful baby.

What is the one place in Ireland that you would not mind seeing every day?
There is a place we like to go to in the North of Ireland, Portrush. It’s beautiful and has great food. We love Dublin as well. Great big city and a lot to do.

  • Really missed Louis here at the Sharks, especially last season. I’d love to see him earn a cap for Ireland.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 2) : also think he really deserves to play international rugby even if it’s against the Bokke and not for the Bokke!!

  • @JD (Comment 3) : I’m still a little irked that Sideshow Bob was rated above Louis for ‘his reliability at the back’. If there’s one trait that Louis Ludik exemplifies, it’s reliability.

  • louis ludik played mostly 13 in his last season at the sharks.imo he could have offered the team a lot in that position.his tackling was always solid (as his opta stats reveal),and strong ball-carrier,especially in the tackle, staying on his feet and gaining extra meters.good handling skills also.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 4) : He would never have let the Boks down. I hope that Ireland cap becomes a reality for him.

When I think of Louis Ludik, I think of that Newlands semi, him taking the high ball out of Joe Pietersens arms, beating 2 and scoring under the poles. Lekker man.
