Kings coach Deon Davids has included unknown 25-year-old tighthead Louis Albertse on his bench for Saturday’s Super Rugby match against the Sharks. When the team was named yesterday, the number 18 jersey was inhabited by “AN Other” – the last minute reshuffle, we understand, is the result of a lingering concussion to first-choice 3 Jacobie Adriaanse.

Albertse grew up in Natal, attending Clifton Primary and Michaelhouse before relocating to Pretoria after school. He played for KZN at both Academy Week and Craven Week level, before representing the Bulls in Vodacom Cup two years running. Like so many others, he followed the Euro and has just returned from Aix-en-Provence in France, where he’s been for the past three seasons.

Sharks links are not uncommon in this Kings squad – and particularly not amongst the tightheads. Tom Botha, who will start the match, played his under 19 rugby in Durban, while Adriaanse is, of course, the older brother of Sharks tighthead Lourens. The former’s injury unfortunately means the brothers will miss the opportunity to play against one another this weekend.

Other Kings with links to Durban are winger Zuks Vulindlu (who came through the Academy and has senior Sharks caps too), Chris Cloete (under 19/under 21 rep), JC Astle and Steven Sykes.

Southern Kings:
15 Jurgen Visser 14 Luzuko Vulindlu 13 JP du Plessis 12 Shane Gates 11 Malcolm Jaer 10 Elgar Watts 9 Ntando Kebe 8 Jacques Engelbrecht 7 Thembelani Bholi 6 Chris Cloete 5 JC Astle 4 Steven Sykes 3 Tom Botha 2 Martin Ferreira 1 Schalk Feirreira
Reserves: 16 Edgar Marutlulle 17 Sithembiso Sithole 18 Louis Albertse 19 Schalk Oelofse 20 CJ Velleman 21 Leighton Eksteen 22 Louis Fouche 23 Charles Radebe
