Eastern Province Kings Chief Operating Officer, Debbie Ellis confirmed yesterday the appointment of Kings Academy Manager Robbi Kempson as the head coach for the 2016 Currie Cup season.

The former Springbok and Sharks front rower joined the EP coaching staff in 2009 and was appointed manager of the newly established Kings Academy in 2010. Kempson has had much success within the Kings junior structures over the last five years, with both the U19s and U21s gaining promotion to their respective A Divisions.

Despite the current financial situation at the Union, and the loss of a number of senior players, preparations are well under way to field a competitive side for the competition.

“Our focus has been on retaining the up and coming talent that the Kings Academy has been developing,” said Ellis.

“A number of the players currently training with the team are Academy players, as well as members of last year’s U19 and U21 Currie Cup squad, who have come through the local school structures and are the future stars of the region,” she said.

Kempson said he was looking forward to coaching the Currie Cup side and to working with the players.

“There has been a lot of hard work put in over the past five years, since the Academy was established, to identify and develop talented players from the region and to keep them here.”

“The purpose of creating a career pathway for these players within the province, where they are given exposure through the junior competitions before going into Currie Cup and then potentially into Super Rugby and on to represent South Africa, cannot simply fall away due to the current challenges being faced,” he said.

The provisional squad have been holding regular training and conditioning sessions at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

The EP Kings Currie Cup assistant coaches and team management will be announced next week and the EP Kings squad later this month.

  • Apparently EP Rugby has been provisionally liquidated…not sure of the details but if they are surely that means no CC for them?

  • @SheldonK (Comment 4) : yes 36 players took them to court, now they must pay them before 10 May or they will be liquidated. Seems some clubs are also calling for a special meeting of EP rugby.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 4) : Wonder if the decision can be appealed by the Kings. If the liquidation goes ahead I assume the Kings are no more and a new Eastern Province Super Rugby franchise will emerge or do I have it all wrong?

  • @vanmartin (Comment 6) : Ya the Kings seemed a different entity to EP Rugby. It puts more doubt about their CC participation though.

  • @JD (Comment 5) : My one mate reckons SARU will bail them out before liquidation but will see what develops. Certainly is troubling times for the region. They need a major sponsor or its just living on borrowed time

  • @SheldonK (Comment 9) : Hope this means players like SP finally gets some payment for time served.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 10) : I wouldnt count on it to be honest. They will pay just enough to keep the players making the most noise there at bay for a while. SP now with the Bulls and being paid so not sure if he cancelled his contract and now doesnt get any more money from EP.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 9) : I also think SARU will help them but I hope that it’s only done after a certain person was removed from power! As for sponsorship I can’t see anyone giving them anything before there was a change of management and even then they will struggle to get someone to sponsor what basically looks like a sinking ship!

  • @JD (Comment 12) : Good ol Cheeky seems very tough to remove there. And yeh as i said without a major sponsor SARU would just be sticking their thumb in the dam wall…only a matter of time before it collapses

  • @SheldonK (Comment 13) : saw a article about some clubs calling for a urgent AGM to try and remove him. If anything will happen is really an open question?!?!? We can only hope!!!!!!

  • @vanmartin (Comment 6) : I understand the Kings and EP Rugby Pty Ltd are separate legal entities.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 16) : or maybe the King Spears..then perhaps Steers would be keen on a sponsorship?

  • Comment 18, posted at 11.03.16 15:54:06 by SheldonK Reply

  • @vanmartin (Comment 6) : @Kiss_the_Gold (Comment 15) : @vanmartin (Comment 16) : regardless of what happens the Kings will remain in Super rugby (as the Kings) as SARU has “taken ownership” of the Kings Super rugby franchise.
However EP rugby is in trouble as they’re facing liquidation if something does not happen!
