Congrats to Philip, Dan, Paul and S’bura

The Sharks team have selected their special jersey recipients for the week.

The yellow jersey, which we’re told is the team “man of the match” award, went to Philip van der Walt after the Bulls game.

Daniel du Preez was awarded the green jersey for best work-rate.

Paul Jordaan snapped up the pink number for best defence, putting in 12 individual tackles at Loftus. Interestingly enough, no South African player completed more tackles than Jordaan this round.

In a move that I applaud, the polka-dot jersey for “best attitude” went to a guy that didn’t play at all against the Bulls. S’bura Sithole, presumably, showed such a good attitude and work ethic over the course of last week, despite finding out early on that he wouldn’t be in the match 23, that his team-mates and coaches felt he was most deserving of the award. That’s the kind of “team first” approach that will make this squad great.

Well done to all of the players!

Edit: Here’s a video the Sharks shared on their Facebook page, explaining this concept a little better.

  • Nothing for EO….

Well done to the guys for recognising Sbu – should mean a heck of a lot to him.

  • Statistically EO should have taken the Green jersey over Dan, but grats to them all. Really like the Sbura move, shows that work ethic at practice is recognized, hopefully that earns him a start.

    Edit:
In saying that Dan does dwarf EO on attack (meters run, breaks, defenders beaten).

  • Glad Dan is recognised and is backed. Sure he’s making to many mistakes at the moment but I would prefer him making those mistakes than not trying at all.

Regarding S’bru glad the squad can appreciate a team man.

He was good enough to make the larger Bok training squad on just 1 SR season – he would have to be insane to not move for a starting spot locally or abroad.

  • I thought this was interesting. Stuff.co.nz usually do a power ranking of all the teams after each round. They seem to be a little uncertain about this Sharks team and I can’t quite admit feeling the same… not sure how good we really are… I guess we will know a little better by Sunday. Anyway, they rank the Sharks eighth which I feel is a little harsh in spite of those lingering doubts. I mean, they have the over-hyped Stormers in second and that should say it all really.

    Eighth

How can the Sharks be ranked eighth, when they are still unbeaten and sitting at the head of the competition table? We are still not sure they are the real deal, that’s why. They butchered a win over the Bulls in Pretoria, with first five-eighth Joe Pietersen missing an easy kick in the front of the sticks after the fulltime hooter.

The Sharks still escaped with a 16-all draw, but his team-mates will take a while to shake the embarrassment of celebrating what they thought was a win ahead of Pietersen’s kick.

  • @JD (Comment 45) : funnily enough there is very little – almost nothing – written about the Bulls in the English media. I assume it’s all on the Afrikaans stuff and that the same goes for the Cheetahs.

The Stormers attract an undue amount of media attention for some unfathomable, and the Lions, Kings and Sharks pick up the odd scraps in the English media.

I’ve also been trying to understand why the Stormers are the only side left in SA who attract a decent crowd every weekend.

Neither of these two factors are due to the Stormers being a particularly good or successful side. I’ve got that far.

There’s also a number of academic institutions in the surrounding area which have strong rugby traditions and the numbers. Most of the African people there are Xhosa people which have roots in the EC and they have strong rugby roots.

  • @Hulk (Comment 49) : A fair travel schedule would have had a bye before and after the travel.

Problem with that though, most SA teams would opt to spend the extra week at home, instead of flying early for acclimatisation.

The Jaguares on the other hand, came over here quite a few weeks before the competition kicked off…..we need that type of commitment from our teams if they’re to win this competition.
