Stormers coach Robbie Fleck has opted to make a few changes and rest key players as his team get ready to tackle Los Jaguares in Argentina on Saturday evening. The most notable players to get a break are Schalk Burger and Pieter-Steph du Toit.

Burger will still be allowed to make an impact off the bench while du Toit has stayed in South Africa for a full break from rugby for the weekend. This means that Sikhumbuzo Notshe and JD Schickerling get their chance to shine. Schickerling will be making his starting debut for the Stormers while Jan de Klerk is set to earn his second cap off the bench.

Other changes to the forwards include Scarra Ntubeni starting in place of Bongi Mbonambi in the hooking berth while Nizaam Carr returns to playing 8.

Amongst the backs, there is a single change in Leolin Zas getting another opportunity after Dillyn Leyds suffered an injury at training during the week. Huw Jones comes onto the bench to provide cover.

Stormers: 15 Cheslin Kolbe, 14 Kobus van Wyk, 13 Johnny Kotze, 12 Juan de Jongh (co-captain), 11 Leolin Zas, 10 Kurt Coleman, 9 Nic Groom, 8 Nizaam Carr, 7 Siya Kolisi, 6 Sikhumbuzo Notshe, 5 JD Schickerling, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Frans Malherbe (co-captain), 2 Scarra Ntubeni, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg

Substitutes: 16 Bongi Mbonambi, 17 Oli Kebble, 18 Vincent Koch, 19 Jan de Klerk, 20 Schalk Burger, 21 Louis Schreuder, 22 Jean-Luc du Plessis, 23 Huw Jones

  • Thats a pretty dynamic loose trio and still a very strong pack. Sharks struggled in the tackle and breakdown vs the Jaguares so will be interesting to see how the Stormers fare purely from a SA players ability point of view. Also interesting to see how the Stormers speedy back 3 handled the very speedy Argies.

  • I just had a super idea for a new Super 21:
    Four pools –
    Pool 1
    NZ teams
    Pool 2
    Ozzie teams
    Pool 3
    SA teams
    Pool 4
Japan, Argies, USA, Canada & South Sea Islands (1 team of each country)

Each pool plays all the other teams in their pool.
Top two teams of each pool progress to super 8 phase and after all 8 teams played each other the top two plays in the Super 21 final!?!?!?

  • @The hound (Comment 30) : of course the game “matters”. The winner takes log points. To qualify for the play offs you need log points. I suspect you don’t fully understand the new format.

  • The log points are needed:

    – to top both teams’ respective conferences
    – if not first place, to be the best 2nd place finisher across both the ‘African’ conferences
    – log points are crucial to earn a home play off, semi and final

So on the contrary there is everything to play for – 4 or 5 log points will assist tremendously.

What you’re getting confused with is the huge slog this competition has become. Teams have to manage their squads better. Players need to be rotated.

One thing Gold has shown us is that he is not a major squad rotator. Whilst I agree that it’s preferable to play your best team every game it’s simply not sustainable in this competition any more. I hope we don’t suffer injuries or burn out later in the marathon.

  • And that’s another reason why this new format sucks. It has moved away from the Super 12 ideal – short, intense, best teams and players in every match, round robin format so no question about the best teams qualifying for the semis and final.

But those days have gone, SANZAAR seem adamant on the conferences (as opposed to a top and bottom division league with promotion which will throw up massive travel issues anyway) and you can be assured we will see more teams added in future. If the teams are like the Jaguars that’s a good thing, if they’re like the Kings that’s a bad thing.

The jury is still out on the Wolves. They try hard but they have so much more potential if Japanese Rugby could buy into them. Imagine their star players turned out for them as the Argentinian players do for the Jaguars? I also wonder if this Singapore/Tokyo dual home is going to work for them because their travel is ridiculous.

Firstly, they mustn’t have watched that Jaguars v Chiefs game to have seen just how close the Jaguars were to a good win and secondly, the Chiefs have won 3 of the last 5 games in Cape Town against their precious Stormers – so who are they to claim they’re some special Chiefs-defeating team all of a sudden? πŸ˜† Usual Stormers hyped up bullshit.

Actually, I did watch the Jaguares v Chiefs live, thought it was a fantastic match, best game of the year.
Although I enjoy the way the Jaguares play, I’m not convinced that they are all that is made out as of yet.
One win in three games, and that by 1 point against a Cheetah side that won’t beat to many this year doesn’t quite live up to the hype of the Jaguares IMO.
I’m sure they stand a very good chance to win tomorrow, and thereby brighten up your day. I know you can’t stand the Stormers, so seeing them lose will certainly make your millennium.
The draw you refer to I’m sure wasn’t done by the Stormer players, neither do they write their own press reports.
Your petty attacks against the team due to outside influences is actually funny, maybe you need to ask why there aren’t any rugby scribes in KZN to write up the Sharks?
And next year when the Sharks miss the Kiwi sides, will it also be brought up every week how easy and nice draw they have?
Glad my reasoning at least brought a smile to your face. And for the record, I’m one supporter, so if you think I am way off, it’s not “the usual Stormer hyped up bullshit” I don’t represent them, I gave my own opinion.

I backed the Brumbies last week, bit me big time, so I have to back my team tomorrow, think if they can defend properly we can capitalize on turn over.
We will miss PSdT (if I may use that name here πŸ˜† ) but we might get at least parity in the scrums.

With this format our best side in the Australian draw really should be able to top the log and comfortably enough to secure a home semi and final. I say any side other than the Stormers because, as you even agree, they’ve made a habit of losing the few home semis they’ve reached over the years. They’re the new chokers of SA Super Rugby πŸ™‚ Maybe this year will be different? If nothing else the SA media believe it. But then they believe that every year πŸ™‚

Nothing new about our chokers tag, can go back to 1998 (I think?) against the Landers at Newlands. The infamous “strike before kick off game”
The worst display was losing to the Sharks who had to fly back from Aus.
Except for the purple patch the Bulls had, SA sides don’t fare well enough in pressure games to win this competition.
But seeing as our country thrives on mediocracy and welcome our national teams back with what can be described as ticker tape parades for “coming close” in World Cups, many supporters are happy to get close.
I just love watching the game, hope my picks are close enough to win me some money and generally don’t have very high expectations.

We love believing our own hype about “how we have the best juniors” how we “have the most and best players”
Fact is, we have quantity over quality in player numbers, and when last have our juniors featured in the Junior WC, last time to my recollection was the one held in SA. Since then the NH teams like England and Wales have actually done better than us when it counted.

The term under Meyer has already ensured that we don’t have to be feared anymore.
The losing streak stretching from the EoYT to the loss against Argentina, and throw in a loss against Japan as well, and I’m sure the other sides believe they have a chance when facing us.
And, as you say, it will probably get worse, we play in June and don’t even have a coach.
The SR trophy drought is mostly that there is always a Kiwi side or two, or an Aussie side, that is just better than the best we have in a particular year.
None of our sides have enough time to build a squad like the Bulls did in their trophy winning years. Our player turnover is so high, as soon as a youngster comes to the fore, he is spotted and chances are he is off in a couple of seasons.
What irks me, and the Sharks IMO suffer more from this at this stage than the other franchises, is the perception that players come back to SR from Japan to rest and recouperate and to fill up their pensions.
With the exception of Jantjies, how many players have actually returned to their franchises after a stint in Japan better than before they left?
I don’t believe a player can serve two or three masters and give each team the same 100% performances.
It seems like the higher paymasters are getting the best of our players and we must be satisfied with one or two glimpses of brilliance a season, or foot the bill for their recovery while they sit on the sidelines.

    Throw in Ireland as well.
I read somewhere that the Irish are saying we are “not respecting them or writing them off”
Something CJ Stander’s family said to him or some other.
What utter bollocks, I haven’t seen anything of the kind, in fact, one has hardly seen any articles about the build up to the series in June.
We don’t even have a coach, how on earth can we be writing them off , when our own side hasn’t even been announced and no one knows who might be chosen?
We know that depending on the coach, his first squad is usually players he is comfortable with or knows, so if it’s AC, well, I’m guessing a few Stormers might get the initial nod when in doubt.
I hope that last line doesn’t cause some to choke on a boerie roll

  • @nortie (Comment 61) : I think you’ve just identified exactly why the Irish feel we are disrespecting them. Precisely because we feel we can appoint a coach so late and only start to prepare then. If the British and Irish Lions were coming over or England, I think SARU would have felt they needed a ship’s captain appointed much sooner.

But don’t also forget, Ireland has a terrible record in SA so anything that makes them feel more motivated – a perceived lack of respect – they will seize upon.

    Very possible.
But someone should tell them it’s nothing personal, no one in SA may sign anything off until the Guptas have rubber stamped it, and they are busy elsewhere and cant sign AC’s appointment.
SARU is a monumental stuff up, bunch of incompetents, so Ireland can sleep easy, we are not dissing them, we just have a bunch of amateurs walking around trying to act like professionals.

  • @nortie (Comment 64) : if South African rugby had more brains – coaching and administration – I don’t think we’d be asking why we haven’t won as many Super Rugby trophies as the NZders and Australians.

  • Never expect anything from South Africa in a cricket world cup and you will be just fine.

  • @nortie (Comment 68) : I think our batsmen decided to split the lucre amongst themselves – having scored 200+ just to witness the bowlers butcher it, I can’t say I blame them πŸ™‚

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 70) :

    πŸ˜† very possible.
Proteas mustn’t even get into a situation where pool games become knock out games.
Can’t even say that we choked, we just aren’t good enough unfortunately.

  • @nortie (Comment 71) : We had the warm-ups choke against Oz already, then the pools choke, thereby completely negating the usual play-offs choke….I think we’re really getting better at this.

  • @nortie (Comment 51) : stopped trying to win money with sports because as soon as I put money on a team/horse/etc they seem to self destruct or fail with metronomic regularity!

  • @Sharks_have_Character! (Comment 54) : @Sharks_have_Character! (Comment 55) : that is a very sad fact! Really can’t see any reason why no other SA sides could managed to win it at least once!?!?!?

  • @nortie (Comment 61) : @Sharks_have_Character! (Comment 63) : don’t think they must take it personal as it is not a reflection on them it’s rather just another sign of SARU’s total incompetence to put rugby first and ensure that SA rugby is run professionally!!!
