The Sharks have released an injury update comprising mostly good news.

Lock Etienne Oosthuizen, number 8 Daniel du Preez and wing Lwazi Mvovo have all recovered from the knocks they sustained against the Crusaders a week ago and are thus fit for selection against the Lions this week. Only Philip van der Walt, who was stretchered from the field following a neck injury, has been ruled out for the time being.

The Sharks will name their side to face the Lions on Thursday – and confirm their New Zealand tour squad a day later.

  • Very relieved! All the best to Philip thou, with all due respect, I think we have enough firepower to keep “continuity” in the loose forward regard.

    Excited for this weekends game!!!

  • @DuToit04 (Comment 2) : it’s big and it’s fluid…. will certainly change a bit once the Impi’s campaign is over.

I’d imagine a team sheet for the opening game will come out by Wednesday latest.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 17) : cloete would have been a nice option to have.just needs to work on his discipline at the breakdown, but definitely plays with plenty of enthusiasm.

  • I see the Jaguars have their main squad players flying out to NZ for their 3rd match, so it is possible and within the tournament rules to do so. The Sharks are going to have to do something similar because their current (non) rotation system is unsustainable.

I’d have the main players (ie the strongest team) target the Lions and Blues and also the Hurricanes and Jaguars for wins. Play the wider squad players against the Highlanders and Chiefs sandwiched in between.

  • @Gold’s Member (Comment 21) : I agree with that strategy…the first stretch of games to the first bye was always going to be vital and wins were important. Now we have a chance to do some serious rotation…of course, our ideas about rotation are – in some positions at least – influenced by plenty of injuries!

  • @JD (Comment 24) : my point is, the Jaguars are sending over Creevy and their ‘A team’ for their last tour match against the Crusaders, so it doesn’t only have to be one tour squad sent over after the Lions game.

I’d play our best team against the Lions. This is a MUST WIN match if we want to top our conference.

Then as you know our fixtures are as follows:

    Blues (A)
    Highlanders (A)
    Chiefs (A)
    Hurricanes (H)
    Jaguars (A)
    Kings (H)

The tournament format sadly does not allow the best team to be played consecutively. Most of the other teams have already employed some form of squad rotation. Whilst I would like to see the Sharks put out their best team and win every game, this tournament doesn’t allow that.

I think the Chiefs and Highlanders games away are unlikely to result in positive outcomes. It would be lovely if they do. But I’d target 2 wins from our 4 away games and the best chances of those are against the Blues (we’ve won the last 10 in a row!) and Jaguars (anything the Stormers do we can do better).

So, I’d play our best team against the Lions this weekend (must win) and Blues, then have an alternative team play the Chiefs and Highlanders. The best team will again assemble and take on the Hurricanes and Jaguars, and those A team players who return from the Argentinian leg can be rested against the Kings at home.
