Benedict caught up with Renaldo Bothma for a few words.

What has the wait been for? You haven’t played in well over a couple of weeks now. What is happening?
It has been a very tough nine weeks!! I’ve been training very hard in the gym and on my conditioning!! I’m still struggling with a foot injury I sustained in Japan!! But I started running today! So I will be hoping that it all goes well!! It’s time for me to return to the rugby field and I am very hungry for the game.

Why the move to the Bulls? It was a big surprise to a lot of Super Rugby fans. What happened?
My injury made everything very hard regarding the move! I was just keen for a new challenge, the Blue Bulls are building a new team and I feel that I can definitely contribute a lot to this team!! I am also a bit closer to my family and friends.

You have added something special to the talented and passionate Namibia rugby side. What are your goals for the national side? Will you guys be taking part in a few Tests this year?
Yes, we have a very strong squad and I am very excited about the future of the national team. We will have a couple of tests in June before our Nations Cup. All the preparation is well under way and I think the most important thing for us is to just keep on growing and developing as a squad! To keep on progressing. I am very keen for what lies ahead!

What has been you impression in the first few weeks of your Blue Bulls career? What has been the highlight?
I have been working really hard with the rehab squad and fitness! I have not really been part of the team set up yet and hopefully next week I will join up with them. I think the way I have progressed with my foot has been great.

You barely got a shot at an off season. You played at the World cup, went to Japan and back into the plans for Super Rugby. Is this not a dangerous pathway for players considering how physical this game is?
I think I was in peak condition before my injury. I worked really hard after the Super Rugby season and I am in tip top shape. I lost a couple of kilos and I feel great! I just continued with that routine since I got back. In Japan you hardly play more than 40 minutes per game, so it also gives you a chance to work hard on your conditioning. I really enjoyed my last couple of months even though it was tough and hard work in the gym.

You played for a season at the Sharks. What was your fondest memory? Who left a lasting impression on you as a player?
I really enjoyed Durban! I think the best memory is definitely when I made my Super Rugby debut. The environment was amazing at the Sharks and I am definitely going to miss one of my best friends Marco Wentzel. We became really good friends, and I have learned a lot from his experience and leadership! The rest of the Durban boys left an impression on me as well.

Dankie Renaldo! We wish you all the best in your new adventure in Pretoria.

  • Good luck Renaldo and hope to see you playing again soon!

  • I really like the way you Sharksworld people keep in touch with old sharks. It shows that we aren’t blind to only what the current sharks are up to

  • Sorry to see him go, but glad we did not have to get a broken body through all it’s rehab and pay for it to boot. Knew it a while ago…mate of mine met him and some other sharks in a pub after the Sharks game against.

He said he is leaving because he and Gold does not get along

  • Thanks for your efforts for the Sharks last year. Good luck for your future. I hope you do really well…but not too well if you do play against the Sharks! 😀
