Gary Gold has named a strong Sharks outfit to face the Blues in Auckland in their first tour match on Saturday. The side features three changes from the unit that started against the Lions at Kings Park last weekend.

Marcell Coetzee, of course, has been ruled out of all rugby for 9 months due to an ACL injury sustained in that game, meaning a shift from number 8 to open side flank for Daniel du Preez. Philip van der Walt, who has recovered form a neck injury picked up over the Easter weekend, comes in to start at number 8. The other two changes are also in the pack; Lourens Adriaanse starts at tight-head prop in a rotational switch with Coenie Oosthuizen, while Stephan Lewies (a late withdrawal last week) is fit again and replaces Hyron Andrews in the number 5 jersey.

The backline remains unchanged this week. Thomas du Toit comes into the number 17 jersey for Juan Schoeman in the only other bench change.

Sharks: 15 Willie le Roux, 14 JP Pietersen, 13 Paul Jordaan, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Joe Pietersen, 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Philip van der Walt, 7 Jean-Luc du Preez, 6 Daniel du Preez, 5 Stephan Lewies, 4 Etienne Oosthuizen, 3 Lourens Adriaanse, 2 Franco Marais, 1 Tendai Mtawarira (captain).
Replacements: 16 Kyle Cooper, 17 Thomas du Toit, 18 Coenie Oosthuizen, 19 Hyron Andrews, 20 Keegan Daniel, 21 Michael Claassens, 22 Garth April, 23 Odwa Ndungane

  • If we are going to win a game on this tour I feel it has to be this one.

  • Not a lot of rotation on the go. Was hoping for a few more players to get a little more game time at this point in the season. Nice to have Thomas, Phillip and Stephan back.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : blues are making quite something of this game.getting the blues players from 1996 final what happened to a blues player this past week will most probably also be used as motivation.will be fired up.tana was not the cleanest player in his time-just ask o’driscoll.hope peyper and co keep their eyes on any off-the-ball stuff and hight hits.

  • Happy about Adriaanse’s star.

Puzzled by Dan Du Preez starting at 6.

…and Joe at 10, let’s hope he sticks with what he knows – territorial rugby.

Would have preferred Claasen and April, but I guess the coaches know best.

  • Another good looking team on paper but its how the guys perform that matters. Nice firepower and ball handling ability in our loose trio. Hoping they use Esterhuizen more as a decoy than no.1 option. And hoping DuToit gets good game time as Beast fades badly in matches. Who captains if Beats goes off? Both Claasens and Ndungane been mentioned as VC before but they would need to be on the field.

  • Comment 7, posted at 14.04.16 11:21:15 by SheldonK Reply

  • I was really hoping for a Claasens / April rotation with Reinach / Joe P. Would have gone for Keegan starting at 6 (and Ninja coming in from the bench) – going to need someone to slow down the Blues ball. They are struggling at the moment but there are some players in that team that will punish you from quick ball.

  • Would have like to see JPP not in the starting team aswell as Reinach but they get a chance, where on tour we have now been written off by most, to prove all the critics wrong. I have a strong feeling about this game that we going to be pleasantly surprised by how well we going to play. Im backing our team to hit the ground running and put in a great performance.

  • It’s a pity the Sharks let Chris Cloete go. He would have been the perfect replacement for Marcell. He’s been playing some great rugby for the Kings.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 15) : agree with you on that call.would have been good for rotation with marcell ,too.but what i was thinking as another option, considering how marcell is an 80 min player: imagine 25 mins of cloete and marcell at the same time ?change the loose trio set-up completely for the final quarter and a bit.

  • Comment 16, posted at 14.04.16 12:07:36 by 50shadesofshark Reply

  • Wow…would have thought Deysel would start at 6. There’s no balance in that loose trio. No forward grunt meaning we won’t dominate their loose forwards. Difficult to then be on the front. Add Cobus’ slow passing game and we are already swimming against the current. This is not a Blues team of old. Gary needs to really think about his team. Would have also thought April would start at 10 with Joe moving to 15. Willie on the bench.

  • Comment 17, posted at 14.04.16 12:14:20 by GreatSharksays Reply

  • Well, last week the line outs and scrums were a bit creaky. The changes will boost those just fine. My worry is the backline where they has been little rotation and minimal changes and yet the same backline has not really gelled and got stuck into attack. I realize it’s easier to criticize but I was hoping for the backs to get mixed up a bit.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 17) : The Blues havnt exactly picked a fetcher either- that probably played into his thinking. Also our 3 guys are good ball players. Not sure why we wouldnt start with our best attacking threat in Willie?

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 17) : I would not select Deysel as an open side flank – only ever at blindside. He is way too slow nowadays. There is plenty of grunt in that trio – the twins are big boys and pretty fast on top of it.

  • Comment 29, posted at 14.04.16 13:18:06 by SheldonK Reply

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 27) : If you play a team that attacks close to the breakdown with a lot of forward drives, he can be very effective. Playing teams that like use the width of the field will take him completely out of the game in that role.

  • Comment 30, posted at 14.04.16 13:28:05 by Bokhoring Reply
  • Should have benched Daniel du Preez and started Keegan Daniel. Daniel has the potential to be our link man between the forwards and the backs. He could actually help us overcome our pathetic attempt at an “attacking” game plan. For that same reason, Gold should have started April. I know Pietersen is Mr. Reliable, but he is holding our attack back with the way he is playing! As it seems, Gold can’t learn from mistakes. Last week should have been a wake up call!

  • Very glad for the boost. Keen to see Adriaanse start and if he will make a difference same with the heavier and more experienced lock. Hope the analysts are taking note and comparing. I must say our lack of cohesiveness and performance has me a little baffled. To rights we should not be struggling as much. Could it be as simple as the right combinations?

  • Comment 40, posted at 14.04.16 15:02:07 by SheldonK Reply

  • @SheldonK (Comment 40) : need to tour with 3 hookers.or rather: it is always better to go with 3 hookers in the touring squad.

  • Comment 41, posted at 14.04.16 15:06:07 by 50shadesofshark Reply

  • @SheldonK (Comment 38) : you absolutely have to have 3 hookers and 5 props on tour.

Consider this…. one of your props or hookers pulls up lame the morning of the match (even slips in the bloody hotel shower) and you have to forfeit the match because you can’t get a replacement there in time. It’s too big a risk to take.

Front rankers are the only positions where you have to have “recognised” players. You can always get a spare flank to sit on the bench to cover scrumhalf, but you cannot get a centre to cover hooker.

  • @robdylan (Comment 42) : Unless its Craig Burden ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Ja, you can’t tour without back up front rankers for that exact reason.

Would have preferred a young hooker to go and leave Chilli with the young CC side, as a mentor – on the field, not off it.

What makes him deserve a spot in the Super side? personally I would never have signed him, but I know there is a very close relationship with JS. I just feel a younger hooker would benefit more from the tour, and in the long run, the Sharks would benefit more.

  • Just remembered something i wanted to mention this week after having another look at the sharks vs lions game.after reinach made the pass to andrews,he was clearly held back twice by the lions player.noticed it on the replay.that is why beast was there playing no9.should have been a sharks penalty.but ultimately that illegal play robbed the sharks from a try imo.the ball was presented with space on the right, that a player like reinach could have exploited to score.or had beast running on to the pass into that space.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 41) : @robdylan (Comment 42) : I think you misunderstood me. Im not saying dont take 3 hookers- you definitely have to in case of last min injury. What im saying is that why take Chili who isnt match fit really unless he is going to be on the bench for games. Just being part of the touring party adds no value. Would rather have taken a match fit u21 guy as cover or a guy like Engelbrecht who can play both prop and hooker-possibly better at hooker. Would Chili have not been better served playing 80min in CC ?

  • Comment 49, posted at 14.04.16 15:45:18 by SheldonK Reply

  • @Poisy (Comment 48) : Its because in SA we believe in conservative, boring choices. They somehow seem to feel Joe is a safe choice. Look at Beuden Barret and Aaron Cruden, when they started out, they were ok players, but they were young and very gifted and were given time to settle and get better. We seem to pick the old pivots.

Just watch JL Dup with the Stormers, he is young and not afraid to give the ball air. He is going to make mistakes, but more importantly, he is going to grow and become a great.

Inno should be on this tour!! end of story, he has the talent and is old enough, 21 is no longer a baby.

  • @Vonno13 (Comment 50) : I think Gold is nervous about April’s goal kicking, hence Joe. But yeh i think both April and Inny should have toured with Joe as outside back cover and Odwa or Sithole not touring

  • Comment 51, posted at 14.04.16 15:49:10 by SheldonK Reply

  • @Vonno13 (Comment 50) : the problem I have with that thinking is that joe makes so many school boy mistakes why not give april a go, atleast april is learning and I wouldn’t get so angry at mistakes but with joe its just 2 often now and he is not the safe choice he is the weaklink

  • Comment 52, posted at 14.04.16 15:49:20 by Poisy Reply
  • @SheldonK (Comment 49) : with the timing of his return and the tour,it did not give much opportunity for a “warm-up” game.think the coaches’ reasoning could be: select 3 chili.if needed, use him from the bench/select him on the bench .

  • Comment 53, posted at 14.04.16 15:56:31 by 50shadesofshark Reply

  • Comment 54, posted at 14.04.16 15:58:09 by Vonno13 Reply
  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 53) : That makes no sense to me. They clearly have invested in him for some reason. So surely you want your investment match fit and firing. Playing 3 weeks of 80min in the CC would get him there. Carrying tackles bags and perhaps the odd couple minutes off the bench still leaves him unfit.

  • Comment 55, posted at 14.04.16 15:59:09 by SheldonK Reply

  • @SheldonK (Comment 55) : I can tell you this for a fact, with Paul Anthony and John Smit at the Sharks, Chilli Boy was always going to be made an offer – not what you know, who you know. Chilli is there because of the PBHS connection, make no mistake about that.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 58) : Well in the first game Chili is getting zero minutes. So that only leaves 2 games. Would be a seriously big call to start him next game so at most on the bench. If he plays more than 30min on tour id be surprised. Which means he is still unfit. 3 games totally close to 240minutes in the CC would have been better management of him.

Joe Pieterson is like a Morne Steyn type Flyhalf . By choosing JOE at 10 I am predicting the same type of game plan against the saders

  • my take is that we are not getting clean ball out of the scrum. It appears that the Japanese team during World Cup realised their shortcomings in the scrum battle and got the ball quickly out the scrum to the backline. Reinach fiddles and farts at the base. Lets try to emulate the nips.Gary Gold seems to have a hard on for JPP. Hope that he justifies the coaches pick.

  • Comment 68, posted at 15.04.16 08:14:46 by SheldonK Reply

  • @Poisy (Comment 48) : I must say it does feel like when Lambie was playing only 5/10mins for the Boks when MS was still playing. He won’t be able to show what he has to offer with only a few minutes every match, neither wil it do his confidence any good. One thing to me though is April does look kind of stressed when he does come onto the field, which on the other side could just be down to the coaches not giving him proper time to settle.

  • Comment 69, posted at 15.04.16 08:49:42 by Quintin Reply

  • @Quintin (Comment 69) : After the Toulouse game i would have loved them to stick with April as i thought he had a good game and first up was the Kings game so perfect timing. But its the SA tendency to pick the safe option. Perhaps its the fear of failure who knows. With Lambie out i would have loved to see April and Radebe given the reins with Joe subbing in with the back 3.
