Chili earns a start

Gary Gold has made a number of rotational changes to the Sharks team that will face the Kings in Durban this Saturday, in the side’s last game before their bye weekend.

Chiliboy Ralepelle comes in for his first start of the camaping as part of a completely new front row that also includes Dale Chadwick and Lourens Adriaanse. That’s the same front row responsible for the late scrum heroics against los Jaguares in Buenos Aires last week and the Kings should prepare themselves for a tough contest from the start. Etienne Oosthuizen also returns for Giant Mtayanda this week, maknig Stephan Lewies the only member of last week’s tight five to start again this time.

Jean Deysel is understandably out, but fortunately Jean-Luc du Preez is fit again and will return to the number 7 jersey, partnering Keegan Daniel and brother Daniel du Preez in an exciting loose trio.

In a bit of unexpected good news, Michael Claassens has been passed fit and will start alongside captain pat Lambie. The midfield comprises Andre Esterhuizen and Paul Jordaan (as we’ve come to expect), while Lwazi Mvovo returns on the left wing, meaning a shift right for JP Pietersen as Odwa Ndungane drops out. Willie le Roux starts as usual at fullback.

A number of stalwarts have been given a complete rest this week; Beast Mtawarira, Franco Marais and Coenie Oosthuizen are all enjoying a break, with Kyle Cooper, Juan Schoeman and Thomas du Toit making their way onto the bench, The two Lubabalo’s, Mtayanda and Mtembu, are also there, along with Stefan Ungerer, Garth April and Odwa Ndungane.

Sharks: 15 Willie le Roux, 14 JP Pietersen, 13 Paul Jordaan, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11. Lwazi Mvovo, 10. Patrick Lambie (capt), 9. Michael Claassens, 8. Daniel du Preez, 7. Jean-Luc du Preez, 6. Keegan Daniel, 5. Stephan Lewies, 4 Etienne Oosthuizen, 3. Lourens Adriaanse, 2 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 1. Dale Chadwick
Replacements: 16 Kyle Cooper, 17 Juan Schoeman, 18 Thomas du Toit, 19 Giant Mtayanda, 20 Tera Mtembu, 21 Stefan Ungerer, 22 Garth April, 23 Odwa Ndungane

  • Note to all prospective Sharks players, if your name is Lubabalo, you MUST have an epic nickname

  • I much prefer this tight 5 to last week, and there are good replacements on the bench for them. I would prefer Keegan at 8 and the twins on the flank but ill live with it. If ever there was a game to try someone in midfield this would be it so i guess they backing only these 2 to play every game. and again interesting that SARU dont require Willie to rest…perhaps an indication he isnt in ACs plans…

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 6) : Mallet was calling for Kolbe to become a SH, which I don’t think is a bad idea. He just won’t cut it on international level as a FB. You need someone with a big boot, good defense and who knows when to fall into an attacking move, he could probably do the latter, but with his size, defense is a huge problem.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 7) : Was Mvovo required to rest, was that something the Sharks were asked to do? Beast hasn’t been forced to rest either. If memory serves correctly Rob said a month or so back the resting Boks criteria was not being implemented this year. I could be wrong though and Rob might of said nothing of the sort.

Kolbe should be trying to book a spot to Rio but even at 7’s wasnt the huge success I thought he would be.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 29) : Reason i prefer him at 8 is his speed off the scrum, his defensive covering lines that he can run at speed, and being at flank his small frame often gets caught up with the heavies but he isnt that effective as say a Dan Dup could be in that situation. At the end of the day regardless of their number they will have their individual roles assigned to them.

If reports are true, next year we will have lost 2 out of current starting back 3. That is not good at all.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 33) : My feeling is he gets more free space playing with a big no8, he is able to roam the field more in positions that he can anticipate, being at no8 he is playing more towards first phase, gets tackled more thus loosing his freedom from second phase when play starts getting loose, that’s what Keagan loves. He likes a more 7’s style in a 15man game. Space, creativity, loose play, cover defence.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 44) : No thats a fair comment too. If he can run off a big no.8 and that no.8 has the ability to offload in or before contact then yes Keegan can be very devastating in that flank role. With the loss of Bothma and now Pottie i would like to see the Sharks move to a more mobile and interacting loose trio. (And pick a heavier tight 5) Yes they still need to do the hard graft (they arent backline players after all 😉 ) but i would like to see our loose trio making a few more passes instead of always just tucking the ball under an arm.
