Khaya Majola’s Sharks XV will take on the similarly up-and-down Golden Lions in Kwa-Mashu this weekend, in a Friday night clash that’s key to the side’s hopes after a loss away to Free State last week.

S’bura Sithole returns to the side and starts at left wing, with Sipho Mkhize replacing Neil Maritxz on the right. The back line is otherwise unchanged, as is the bulk of the forward pack Gerhard Engelbrecht starts at tight head prop in place of Thomas du Toit in the only change there.

In a pleasant surprise, we see Ruan Botha named on the bench and set to start his comeback after a long injury break.

Sharks XV:

15. Alrin Eksteen, 14. Sipho Mkhize, 13. Nkululeko Marwana, 12. Heimar Williams, 11. S’bura Sithole, 10. Tristan Tedder, 9. Dylan Marcus, 8. Retief Marais, 7. Johan du Toit, 6. Khaya Majola (Capt), 5. Hyron Andrews, 4. David McDuling, 3. Gerhard Engelbrecht, 2. Stephan Coetzee, 1. Mzamo Majola
16. Andrew du Plessis, 17. John Meyer, 18. Ruan Kramer, 19. Ruan Botha, 20. Wian Vosloo, 21. Jaywinn Juries, 22. Tristan Blewett

  • On paper this is a very useful side. However, they have looked very unstructured in their games so hoping thats 1 thing that changes. The pack does look a bit soft though. Sithole at wing clearly shows that the Sharks only see him as a wing not a centre.

  • Will be interesting to see how this side does, definitely been erratic this season.

Good to see some Super Rugby fringe players getting some game time here, such as Sithole and Andrews, can only be a good thing.

Really hope Botha is up and ready and stays injury free for a while.

  • Perfect timing for Botha to make his comeback from an injury, right as the Sharks go into a long break. Does the Currie Cup competition also take a break now?

  • Morne Joubert talented player Glenwood old boy, SA Schools ,and SA Schools 7 s player, once again has not being given a chance to play for the Sharks CC this weekend. The talented Utility back made it to the final day of the SA u/20 training squad in Stellenbosh, leaps and bounds ahead of every one else, not chosen because of political reasons. It seems the Coach of his Provincial team is not interested in the best player on the Field. Makes me wonder what the future hold for these young talented players. No wonder young boys aspire to play over seas before the green and gold jersey, what a shame…..

He’s far better at 13 than he is on the wing!

  • @ChrisS (Comment 12) : I really dont know if they would at the Lions to be honest. If he wants to play centre he should come out and say he only wants to play centre and then he must be only picked as one or signed to another team as one.

  • @JD (Comment 17) : @JD (Comment 18) : I think the guy needs to be playing regularly for a start. He is jumping between some minutes in the CC side to benching for super rugby, he just needs some constant game time at whatever level. At the moment he is seen as a wing so he needs to play well there. if he only wants to play centre then he must make that decision and then figure out where he stands in that pecking order at the sharks, perhaps its down to club level, i dunno. But main thing is he needs to just play rugby as i really cant recall him doing very much on the field this year to warrant higher selections…

  • @Big Fish (Comment 20) : I think Heimar has played a bit more rugby but yeh also probably hasnt shown enough perhaps. The difference being Heimar is pretty much the no.2 inside centre at the Sharks…Sithole is rated the 4th best wing and well doesnt seem to even feature on the centre ratings.

  • Comment 22, posted at 20.05.16 09:08:20 by SheldonK Reply

  • @SheldonK (Comment 22) :
There is no probably – Heimar has been nowhere in the 2 games I watched. Sithole shone – at wing though.

Whether he plays at wing or centre though, he should back himself and leave the Sharks to go to another union or abroad. Clearly he isn’t that highly rated here. He shouldn’t become another Adi Jacobs.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 23) : Sithole shining at wing in that one game is probably why he got himself a bench spot…but then his yellow card didnt aide his cause at all. And he is probably still rated as the 4th best wing. So yeh if he sought out other opportunities i couldnt blame the guy. From what ive heard and seen Heimar has been solid but not spectacular…and well i dont know of any other 12s at the Sharks that have exactly put up their hand as the no.2 inside centre so as far as im concerned its still him. And what happens if we get to a crucial playoff game and Esterhuizen goes down with an injury…i can bet its Heimar that will play

  • @The Coach (Comment 10) : Joubert is a highly-rated player for sure. It can’t be long before he’s given an opportunity to play at that level. I think he just needs to be patient, put the disappointment of SA Under 20 behind him and concentrate making himself a must-pick for the Sharks XV.

CC team will be Chadwick (unless he goes to Japan), Marais, Du Toit, Oosthuizen, Ruan Botha, Keegan (think he’s done with Japan, else Kleynhans), twins at 7 & 8 (unless they get Bok call), 9 Ungerer, 10 April, 11 Sithole, 12 Esterhuizen, 13 Jordaan, 14 Odwa, 15 Curwin Bosch.
