Come on, Sharks – dispel the gloom!

Anyone remember that heady day back in May when the Sharks piled on the tries and recorded a very satisfying win against the Kings in Durban? It seems like a hell of a long time ago now, but it feels to me, at least, that we were feeling pretty good about our prospects as we headed into the extended international break.

Things have changed, of course (and not just on the rugby field, although these other developments have done little to lift my mood). The Lions – our must-beat next-up opponents – recorded a stunning win at Loftus during our bye week to pile pressure firmly back onto the Sharks. As the importance of a result at Ellis Park this weekend started to increase, the blows started to come; first Pat Lambie suffered a serious concussion that looks near certain to keep him out of the clash. Next, Garth April and Lwazi Mvovo were essentially both dropped from the Bok side and we’ll need to see just what sort of effect those events have had on their confidence. Willie le Roux’s suspension is just another blow to a side that must now, surely, be back to square one when it comes to trying to pick a back division for Saturday’s game.

Donโ€™t forget to place an informed bet on this match for a little more excitement. Weโ€™d suggest using any of the tips and strategies offered at

The off-field machinations, with John Smit’s resignation announcement and the ongoing press spat between the current and former administrations of the Sharks, have done little to encourage fans and with those teams that have been playing – the Sharks XV and under 19 squad – continuing to struggle (and hence expose serious questions about depth) there seems to be very little cause for excitement or hope.

The perfect antidote to all of this, of course, will be strong end to the season for the Sharks in Super Rugby. We may battle at Ellis Park on the weekend, but with a strong squad playing good rugby, I’m very hopeful that a wildcard play-off place is very much in our sights and who knows what can happen from then? A good tour of New Zealand earlier in the year must surely give us a reason to believe that we could progress past the last 8. Just maybe.

Let’s do this, Sharks!

  • Rob You sound like a person living in a country who just got its collective arse handed to them in their national game, by a country with a population the size of Bloemfontein.
I firmly believe we have guys in our team seething at being side lined by Alistar Coetzee who are going to come out totally refreshed with a huge point to prove.Esterhuizen and Jordaan, Lewies and Botha.
I predict a good Sharks win against an over confident Lions team.

In my really humble opinion,we should stick to most of the team that did duty against Kings. As mentioned, those that were overlooked by AC for national team have a point to prove.Maybe the forced rest for Willie will do him good & give him perspective. We do have a team that can win,so let’s get behind them & push. ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜› ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

On our side, April should start, JJP on FB and Ninja , Jean Luc and Keegs our trio with Afdriaanse , Beast and Chilly up front. I think we have a good shot if the guys pitch with the right attitude. Both JJP and Beast looked a lot better in the last game, lets see if they back it up this week.

  • @The hound (Comment 30) : I agree, he didn’t use his chance like he should have. Haven’t noticed him having a point to prove against us though, but it does make sense. I think Jordaan and AE will feel they have a lot to prove seeing that neither of our Bok centers performed to their abilities, there might be a spot open on the Bok bench at least. Paul was just starting to hit his straps and then we had a bye. I hope he gets back to it with immediate effect, as for AE, I’m just glad he had a break, he looked tired, but didn’t perform to bad though seeing that he started all of the games, right?

  • @The hound (Comment 34) : Id be surprised if Jantjies plays- his hand clearly still fractured judging by his tackle technique vs Ireland

  • Comment 35, posted at 28.06.16 15:01:53 by SheldonK Reply

  • @SheldonK (Comment 35) : I reckon that try they scored was a direct consequence of him never really being a great defender, not his hand influencing his technique but it’s always a possibility. I’m not saying he is a bad defender, just think he’s got a lot to improve on in that area.

  • Comment 36, posted at 28.06.16 15:30:02 by Quintin Reply

  • @Quintin (Comment 36) : The try in the last test when the guy beat Jantjies to score under the poles you can clearly see Jantjies pulling his arm away. Now im not sure if thats the fractured hand but he clearly pulled his arm away from the tackle. He isnt naturally a big tackler but he isnt that bad

  • Sharks team that played the last game before the break:
15 Willie le Roux, 14 JP Pietersen, 13 Paul Jordaan, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11. Lwazi Mvovo, 10. Patrick Lambie (capt), 9. Michael Claassens, 8. Daniel du Preez, 7. Jean-Luc du Preez, 6. Keegan Daniel, 5. Stephan Lewies, 4 Etienne Oosthuizen, 3. Lourens Adriaanse, 2 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 1. Dale Chadwick
Replacements: 16 Kyle Cooper, 17 Juan Schoeman, 18 Thomas du Toit, 19 Giant Mtayanda, 20 Tera Mtembu, 21 Stefan Ungerer, 22 Garth April, 23 Odwa Ndungane
I can see changes at 15, 10, 8, 4 and 1…and then on the bench as a consequence

  • @markm (Comment 11) : I would rather have April at flyhalf and Joe at FB. Joe is good but at flyhalf he is hardly exciting we are going to need some fire from the flyhalf to get the backline going.

  • I think that Andre Esterhuizen and Paul Jordaan could have been given a shot at a bok spot a backline looking like this can be very dangerous

    9 – Faf de Klerk
    10 – Patrick Lambie
    11 – Willie le Roux
    12 – Andre Esterhuizen
    13 – Paul Jordaan
    14 – Ruan Combrinck
    15 – Jesse Kriel

I have placed willie on the wing because he is not the best defender and I think he plays a lot better at wing also so we can have Jesse kriel at #15

also not being bias because I am a Sharks fan , I only think that Paul Jordaan is one of the best #13 we have in SA atm same with Andre Esterhuizen other option I would include is that van Rensburg #12 of the lions , my 2 cents

  • On this weekends match , well I am nervous I have to say I really do hope we can use Lambie , I am a huge fan of April as I also know him personally but I would rather have him play off the bench in this match than starting if Lambie cannot play would go with April at #10 and Joe at #15 with Bosch on the bench as cover for 10 and 15 , but as I said I would reaaly want Lambie to play I am sure like all the other Sharks fans , we will need that cool head and a very good kicker I think April and Joe can really stuff up the kicking during these big matches

  • Comment 47, posted at 29.06.16 07:05:30 by coolfusion Reply

  • Combrinck at #15 also good idea I think but where do we put Jesse on the wing he is terrible and I think JP need some bench time to see that he is not an auto pick in the starting team , if JP or another wing can really pull JP their socks I would use Combrinck at #15 but I kinda like him at wing

  • Comment 48, posted at 29.06.16 07:08:43 by John Reply

  • @John (Comment 45) : I do like that combo i must say. I also believe LeRoux plays better on the wing as has more freedom. I guess the only centres to really put up their hands other than Esterhuizen/Jordaan is Van Rensburg/Mapoe. Combinations are so important…even the All Black midfield isnt looking as good because of the lack of a combination.

  • Mapoe is good at the Lions and he deserved his chance at the boks and I do know that de Allende did not pass but I feel Mapoe was left wanting in the #13 jersey maybe with time he will get better but what better to help him up his game than to give him so compition for the jersey and bring Jordaan in , andre is a better player than de Allende in my view I would also give Van Rensburg a shot at the #12 jersey de Allende is good but really lacking form atm , on form he can be deadly for defence I know

  • @John (Comment 50) : Esterhuizen can be one of the best and most feared centers in the game. The game against the blues I think where he ran at 3 defenders, and doing a sunny bill offload was really great to see, it was a brilliant offload to Jordaan and Jordan( with his pace had no one in front of him) .AE stands at 1.94 m tall which gives him good height to get his hands loose in contact and put in a offload. If he can offload more like that it would be a very dangerous combo as AE draws in 3 defenders which opens up the space for Allende didn’t offload once and that bothers me , as soon as he gets the ball he’s upper body bows down almost perpendicular to his legs running neck/head first into defense. I know allister wanted our ball carriers to have a lower body position but really! I mean how is De Allende able to see where his going with his head down

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 53) : That is a tricky one with all of Lambie, Pieterson, Radebe all injured and Tedder doing duty for the Sharks XV. Very risky only taking 1 goal kicker so it either has to be Bosch (the only non injured kicker) or using a club guy like Duncan Campbell. Unless there is someone else that can kick that i dont know about.
