Smith in line for Sharks debut

The Sharks have named a strong team to face the Lions at Ellis Park in super Rugby this Saturday, with Beast Mtawarira once again taking over the captaincy as Pat Lambie sits out with concussion.

Injuries to Lambie, Joe Pietersen and Willie le Roux have prompted the inclusion of Leopards utility back Rhyno Smith – a player who joined the Sharks as a loan player in pre-season – on the bench. Odwa Ndungane shifts to fullback, with JP Pietersen and Lwazi Mvovo at wing. Andre Esterhuizen and Paul Jordaan will combine once more in midfield, with Garth April taking over from Lambie in the flyhalf channel.

Michael Claassens is the scrumhalf.

Up front, Franco Marais and Lourens Adriaanse join Mtawarira in the front row, an indication that the Sharks are gearing up for a big scrum battle. Stephan Lewies and Etienne Oosthuizen are the locks, with Keegan Daniel and Jean-Luc du Preez providing back-row continuity. Fit-again Philip van der Walt is at number 8, in place of Daniel du Preez who picked up an injury against the Kings 6 weeks ago.

There’s some decent beef on the bench; Thomas du Toit and Coenie Oosthuizen, both capped for the Bok A side this year, are the props, with Chiliboy Ralepelle the hooker. Ruan Botha is in line for his first Sharks Super Rugby appearance as the lock replacement, while Tera Mtembu is the loose forward replacement.

S’bura Sithole and Stefan Ungerer will sit on either side of Smith.

Sharks: 15 Odwa Ndungane, 14 JP Pietersen, 13 Paul Jordaan, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Garth April, 9 Michael Claassens, 8 Philip van der Walt, 7 Jean-Luc du Preez, 6 Keegan Daniel, 5 Stephan Lewies, 4 Etienne Oosthuizen, 3 Lourens Adriaanse, 2 Franco Marais, 1 Tendai Mtawarira (capt).
Subs: 16 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 17 Thomas du Toit, 18 Coenie Oosthuizen, 19 Ruan Botha, 20 Tera Mtembu, 21 Stefan Ungerer, 22 Rhyno Smith, 23 S’bura Sithole

  • This really is Sitholes chance to put in a strong performance. I imagine he will get some time on the field as I don’t see Odwa lasting the full game at 15. The scrum battle is going to be intense and hope Beast puts in a strong performance. I imagine Tera being on the bench suggests Dan is still injured and am glad Keegan is starting. I really like the look of our loose trio. Dare I believe we can win this?

  • We sure are underdogs for this one alright.. but maybe, just maybe we can pull a rabbit out of the hat.

  • Great loose trio! Would like to see Ruan Botha,Sithole and Smith get some time of the bench, but all in all, it’s as expected.

  • @Hulk (Comment 2) : I’m very pleased about Keegan, he brings so much energy to the team, one of my favorite players.

  • This is actually a pretty good side and a strong bench too. Definitely will be a tough game in Jhb but hoping the Sharks push them hard and you never know. Discipline will be key as Peyper loves blowing his whistle. My prediction- if our penalty count is less than the Lions we will win.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 6) : Agh, I don’t like Peyper at all. Blows the game to a stand still.

  • @Quintin (Comment 7) : Look i think he blows to the letter of the law…but the best refs blow the whistle for infringements that actually affect the game not every minor thing.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 8) : Yeah I get what you mean. Come to think of it, it might help slow down the pace a bit and count in our favor, if the penalties go the right way that is.

  • With LeRoux probably leaving i really hope the Sharks give Rhyno Smith an offer. The Sharks backline next year including guys like Lambie, April, Mvovo, Etserhuizen, Smith, Bosch, Claasens, Reinach,Sithole,Mjekevu could be very interesting…

  • @stevovo (Comment 16) : Bosch having just returned from a heavy workload at JWC and still questions over his conditioning for senior rugby. Rhyno SMith someone the sharks have looked at before and possibly want to try get fulltime. He has experience of senior rugby. Is a goal kicker as well.

  • @West Indies Cricket Board (Comment 17) : Any reason why he wouldnt be? He is pretty much out injured till start of next year.

  • Comment 19, posted at 30.06.16 11:53:21 by SheldonK Reply

  • @stevovo (Comment 16) : Jeez guys, how many more times must it be stated, he is not yet ready.

When he is ready, he will be picked – enough on Bosch now, he will play in the u21 CC and can prove himself there.

  • @Vonno13 (Comment 20) : Bosch is like a new motorbike. When you get it new you can’t push it to it’s pull capacity otherwise you risk damaging it. With this in mind you still want to do it.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 18) : @Vonno13 (Comment 20) : Ok, point taken, I don’t know Smith that well and it will be interesting to see what value he could possibly add as part of the Sharks setup.
