Sharks XV back youth

It hasn’t been a great campaign to date, but for me anyway, there is some reason for enthusiasm this week, as Michael Horak goes “back to his roots” in picking a Sharks XV line-up to face the Leopards. Horak had a good amount of success last year with a talented Sharks under 21 side and has included the bulk of that team in the starting lineup this week.

Dave McDuling, as one of a few exceptions to that rule, takes over the captain’s armband. He starts alongside Hyron Andrews, while there are a few more relative veterans at prop, with Juan Schoeman and Gerhard Engelbrecht starting. Newcomer Stephan Coetzee starts at hooker, but that’s really it in terms of guys who did not play for the under 21s last year.

Impressive young opensider, Graham Geldenhuys, starts for the first time after missing the bulk of the campaign with an injured toe. Wian Vosloo, a bug huling utility forward with a massive work rate, gets a run at blindside flank, while gifted playmaker Ayron Schramm is at number 8.

Amongst the backs, there is good news aplenty. Inny Radebe is over his latest injury and starts once more at flyhalf, alongside scrumhalf Dylan Marcus. Marra Louw is also fit again and will be on Radebe’s shoulder, with Neil Maritz at 13. Malcom Cele and Legend Marwana are the wings.

Be sure to look out for the phenomenally-talented Morne Joubert, starting for the first time this season in his favoured fullback berth.

This game takes place at Northwood Crusaders in Durban North this afternoon. Get down and watch, if you can.

Sharks XV: 15 Morne Joubert, 14 Malcolm Cele, 13 Neil Maritz, 12 Marius Louw, 11 Nkululeko Marwana, 10 Inny-Christian Radebe, 9 Dylan Marcus, 8 Ayron Schramm, 7 Wian Vosloo, 6 Graham Geldenhuys, 5 Hyron Andrews, 4 David McDuling (capt), 3 Gerhard Engelbrecht, 2 Stephan Coetzee, 1 Juan Schoeman
Subs: 16 Kerron van Vuuren, 17 Mzamo Majola, 18 Ruan Kramer, 19 Christiaan de Bruin, 20 Jaywinn Juries, 21 Duncan Campbell, 22 Marcel Coetzee

  • Hopefully the familiarity of the players in this side will aide their performance. Wont be an easy game thats for sure.

  • Glad to see Inny back. Does anybody know if Marius Louw is ready or good enough for super rugby yet? He’s been around for a while.

  • @Hulk (Comment 2) : He needs another year, still young. Very strong player and commited on defence, but needs to work on his off loading and distribution. The players I think you will see go onto Super Rugby level in the next year or two – Gelgenhuys, Schramm, Radede, Louw, Bosch and we will see how M Joubert goes

  • @JD (Comment 5) : Just remember this is a very young side playing against a senior side. I am expecting a better result, but do not expect miracles, a win would be fantastic.

  • @Vonno13 (Comment 6) : don’t expect miracles but they do need to show they’re 2nd or 3rd in line for Super rugby spots!

  • I would like to see radebe have a long injury free run so we can see if he has what it takes. I’m not convinced yet.

  • U/19’s lost 50 – 19 to the blue bulls….clearly contracting some 3000 juniors every year paying dividends for the bulls.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 9) : cause they’ve won 3 super rugby titles, think that helps a lot I don’t know what the prize money is but it must be a lot considering how many juniors they seem to recruit

  • @robdylan (Comment 11) : Trying to remember: the last time SharksXV won, did the SR team win or lose?

  • Did anyone watch this game live? Was wondering how Radebe played in his first game back? And i also believe Geldenhuys had a good game. I only had one mate that watched but he spent most of the time at the bar

  • @SheldonK (Comment 16) : Geldenhuys is always good. That kid is going to be a great for us.

As for Inny, I heard he was a little shaky.

  • @robdylan (Comment 17) : I havnt seen much of Geldenhuys to be honest…i sort of remember him playing for the u21s but was watching other players more. After Inny who is next in the flyhalf line? Bosch? Although think he is better at 15.
