The Sharks XV will take on the Valke at Kings Park this afternoon seeking a third successive win; after a woeful start to th campaign, Michael Horak’s team are enjoying something of a mini renaissance as the season nears its conclusion.

The team that beat the Griffons last week was somewhat disrupted due to illness to a number of players. This week, Horak has been able to return to the core of the young side that is likely to feature in under 21 rugby this year in a team that must surely be in with a chance of silverware in that competition.

Morne Joubert shifts back to fullback, with Marius Louw’s inclusion meaning Legend Marwana can move from inside centre to wing. Ayron Schramm is also back ant start at number 8 in place of Christiaan de Bruin, while Khaya Majola is at open side flank in place of Graham Geldenhuys.

Sharks XV: 15. Morne Joubert, 14. Nkululeko Marwana, 13. Neil Maritz, 12. Marius Louw, 11. Malcolm Cele, 10. Inny-Christian Radebe, 9. Hanco Venter, 8. Ayron Schramm, 7. Wian Vosloo, 6. Khaya Majola, 5. Hyron Andrews, 4. David McDuling (Captain), 3. Gerhardus Engelbrecht 2. Stephan Coetzee , 1. Juan Schoeman
Replacements: 16. Kerron van Vuuren, 17. Barend Potgieter, 18. John Meyer, 19. Jean Droste, 20. Jaywinn Juries, 21. Duncan Campbell, 22. Alrin Eksteen

  • Finally sharks get a chance to attack after 23min and we look good and finding space. We knock on but we had advantage so penalty to us. Iny knocks it over sharks 3-7 valke 25min

  • Comment 18, posted at 15.07.16 16:42:38 by Poisy Reply
  • Eksteen looks like his sick or something bothering him. Since he came on, he missed tackle that lead to a try, when we finally attacked he knocked on the ball, and now the ball has been ripped away from him in a tackle and now he missed another tackle.

  • Eish this wasnt good rugby from the Sharks and the Valke could have put a lot more points on us. Sharks handling was woeful and as for the scrum and defense…pretty much non existent. I know these are ‘kids’ but they are going to need a massive amount of improvement if they are ever going to make a successful step up. Ona side note the 3 best Valke players Hooker Muir (Glenwood), 8 Mamajele (Played at Crusaders), and 10 Potgieter (Glenwood) were all in Durban but not looked at twice as we had better…

  • @SheldonK (Comment 40) : Venter’s service looked snappy from what I saw but I had hoped the defensive structures from SR team would flow through. How long is Omar’s contract? If he can also work with CC and u21s that would be great

  • Comment 41, posted at 18.07.16 08:48:05 by Kabouter Reply

  • @Kabouter (Comment 41) : Venter is a good scrumhalf but does tend to go walkabout in some games- he needs to be consistent. Being his first season i think omar was mainly tasked with getting the top side right and yes stuff will filter down but not necessarily hands on stuff. Again you can have the best structures on paper but its up to the players to execute it…

  • Comment 42, posted at 18.07.16 09:12:55 by SheldonK Reply

  • @SheldonK (Comment 42) : It was a kak game of rugby and every single Sharks player, from 1-15 were crap. I know one of the players very well and the general consensus was that the Valke were terrible and would be walked over. Well, that certainly did not happen.

Inno did not have a great game, in the first half, there was a huge overlap on the right just outside the Valke 22 and he kicks it. The commentators were saying he is having a good game because of some good runs, but from what I am seeing, the kid is not looking to pass the ball. It was just a poor performance and the guys need to take a good hard look at themselves. I have backed this side from day one, as I know many of the u21 guys and realise they still young and it will take time for them to learn etc – but Friday was not good, no game direction and no passion.

then on a management side, in the second half, it looked like Schramm could hardly walk, clearly something wrong with his left leg but they keep him on the entire game, just makes no sense.

  • Comment 43, posted at 18.07.16 11:04:15 by Vonno13 Reply
  • @Vonno13 (Comment 43) : Yeh i think you summed it up perfectly…not just this game but the whole season – no game direction and no passion. There has been no leadership in this side. Both Khaya Majola and Dave McDuling are great guys but not great leaders. The Sharks XV forwards just seemed to not have the stomach for the fight and like you say Inny seemed very reluctant to put his hand up and provide the direction and leadership from 10. Sharks should look to Warren Potgieter…we need another 10 in the system.

  • Comment 44, posted at 18.07.16 11:08:00 by SheldonK Reply

  • @SheldonK (Comment 44) : It is just very hard to accept, I was never good enough to play at that level, but would have given my left leg to pull that jersey over my head and run out at Kings Park. The entire front 5 including K Majola have played at Super Rugby level, how do you just allow yourself to be shoved around by the Valke, one of the worst teams in the comp. There is and can only be one conclusion, the guys are just not bothered by this qualifying competition. I still feel that each and every single chance you get to pull a Sharks or any professional rugby jersy over your head, you should feel pride and play at 150%. Just go and ask any 1st team club player what it would mean to them.

  • Comment 45, posted at 18.07.16 11:28:53 by Vonno13 Reply
  • @Vonno13 (Comment 45) : I fully agree with you. Motivation for this comp seems low for the Sharks but for a team like WP their guys are dying for each other every game. Perhaps the benefit of a more settled union and better leadership and direction throughout. I just kept getting the feeling every game i watched that all the players were waiting for someone to put up their hand and lead the charge and provide the direction. I know he/they are doing a job for the top side but would Keegan Daniel/Jean Deysel/Odwa Ndungane not have benefitted this side so much more in getting the depth ready.

  • Comment 46, posted at 18.07.16 11:54:01 by SheldonK Reply

  • @SheldonK (Comment 46) : With regards to an older player – ie Daniel, Deysel, yes absolutely, I am certain they would have got far more out of the junior players, as they demand respect on the field.

Look, it is not all doom and gloom, like I said, this side is gearing itself up for u21 and have by far the youngest squad in the comp – but what worries me, is that Horak is coach of the u21 side and the pattern of play is very suspect. In fact, I am talking about pattern of play here, on Friday there was none. And this whole Sharks mentality of defend, defend, defend is just rubbish. Upskill the players and lets have a run, I like Inno and I know he has potential, but when it is on out wide, give the ball air, stop just blady always kicking.

  • Comment 47, posted at 18.07.16 12:28:10 by Vonno13 Reply
  • @SheldonK (Comment 46) : One more thing, like you mention, Province seem to give it 100% all the time.

Now that is the funny thing, we BEAT them – so the talent is there, it is just about getting the right mindset, week in and week out

  • Comment 48, posted at 18.07.16 12:34:29 by Vonno13 Reply
  • @Vonno13 (Comment 47) : I fully agree about pattern of play and just team interplay…the thing is we have to defend, defend ,defend because we can hardly pass the ball to each other without dropping it or it going forward or behind the player etc…and then we are so slow to a ruck that we lose the ball…so it has to be defend, defend, defend.

  • Comment 49, posted at 18.07.16 12:49:03 by SheldonK Reply

  • @SheldonK (Comment 49) : but then also defend with conviction, line speed and just some mongrel…
