It seems that April is allergic to tackling, so that’s a weakness. Ungerer went from starting well to I don’t know what; Kyle Cooper…eish. We are in for a world of hurt in the QF

Trust the guys will up their tempo for next week….maybe a quarter in NZ will do the guys good, away from the Durban press and rumoured boardroom issues.

Surprised at the comments on Ungerer though – I thought Classen had a ‘mare.

  • Well done on qualifying for the playoff Sharks. But a lot of improvement required. April gifted the Sunwolves 2 tries and butchered a couple of opportunity. Seems to be a different player to the one he was before the break. Hope Lambie is able and allowed to play. Congratulations to Curwin Bosch on his first SR try.

  • @JD (Comment 114) : That’s what I saw. Also Ungerer caught napping once or twice and didn’t seem to be able to ignite the backline. I really thought we would completely dominate set pieces. We got turned over quite easily and struggled to return the favor. April made some stupid mistakes but I must say I think his game would have been more steady if Claasens started.

    1. Adriaanse must start

  • @JD (Comment 121) : Our kicking game under Lambie works, April does not have a good attacking kicking game, save for the try where Bosch told him where and how to kick the ball.

I’d hate to throw Bosch in the deep end, but he need to start at fullback next week, he has the vision to read the game, especially with his deadly boot.

  • We were quicker at the breakdown once the subs were on, but I wouldn’t attribute this to Classens only. It was clear that the message was to pick up the tempo and a guy like Deysel made a huge difference in getting over the advantage line – which always makes clearing the subsequent breakdown easier.

I rate Classens, but yesterday he again made a lot of errors – a few grass level passes on attack and some short passes that the receiver had no hope of catching.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 129) : I agree 100 % the rules are set at the start of the season it is your responsibility as coach or DoR to know and follow them , yes we have a lot of injuries fine , but is there no back up plan to this we all know that injuries happen and can happen to any player 6 weeks ago Gold should have seen that this might happen and started preparing and they can’t say that they did not know they will be in the QF you should play every game with the mindset that you are preparing for the finals this is not counting your chicken before they hatch , it is preparing or do the SHARKS play Super Rugby to only full up the competition

  • @John (Comment 130) : on the subject of knowing the rules, doesn’t Bosch qualify as an injury replacement? Not sure – but have read that might be the case. Not sure that Gold has done much wrong here – Lambie is a big loss and if somebody told me we’d qualify ahead of the Bulls despite him and Coetzee being out for the season, I’d have been surprised. Weren’t there mutterings on this site that with his selection, we might lose to the Sunwolves.

  • @JR (Comment 131) : As far as I know Bosch cannot play but will have a look into that for sure , what I feel that Gold did wrong is that we did not prepare for situations like these we don’t have a fullback or a outside centre ready … we struggle to play our current game plan and it is not working , we have injuries so the cohesion does take a knock but that is why he should not play your players into the ground give others a chance that also build cohesion and when someone do get injured the other can only fall in our kicking game don’t work with Garth so then where is the backup plan ? you need a kicking and running game my coach always say you choose your game plan according the player you have not force the players you have to play a game they are not good at . We are lacking preparation and depth big time

    15. Willie le Roux, 14. JP Pietersen, 13. Paul Jordaan, 12. Andre Esterhuizen, 11. Lwazi Mvovo, 10. Garth April, 9. Michael Claasens, 8. Daniel du Preez, 7. Jean-Luc du Preez, 6. Keegan Daniel, 5. Stephan Lewies, 4. Etienne Oosthuizen, 3. Lourens Adriaanse, 2. Franco Marais, 1. Tendai Mtawarira (C)
Replacements: 16. Chiliboy Ralepelle, 17. Dale Chadwick, 18. Thomas du Toit, 19. Hyron Andrews, 20. Jean Deysel, 21. Stefan Ungerer, 22. Patrick Lambie, 23. Odwa Ndungane

We beat them 32-15 (4 tries to 2) when they were on form, having just put 50 past the lions in Joburg.

We can play virtually the same 23 in the quarter finals. Yes we will be playing away this time and I’m not saying it will be easy. But we can win. Anything is possible in knock out rugby πŸ™‚

And the “gamble” was never about the Jaguares game, it was/is about taking on the play-offs with a fresh first team and we’ll see how it pans out this weekend against a tired and travelled Crusaders side.

Furthermore, the Sharks probably have a better chance of taking out the Canes than the Lions as the Kiwis have struggled with the Sharks game plan. If the Sharks win, the potential final reverts back to Joburg.

The real gamble is still playing off πŸ™‚

  • @Baylion (Comment 172) : Sharks, Sharks, Sharks supporters everywhere…even turncoat Greeneway will have to tone down on his anti-sharks mud-slinging pieces, all in the best interest of Strools…suck to be part of camp BvZ these days 😈

  • @Baylion (Comment 175) : I see the Saders will only leave NZ on Tuesday, added to that, they have neither Ellis nor Nandolo available.

I’d say, as long as Redelinghuys plays, Lions should take it….anyone remember that semi where the bulls trampled a star stocked Saders at Loftus?

  • A loophole for Lambie?

Messam has been ruled ineligible on the following grounds: ” Because he was not part of the original squad of 40, to be eligible for finals matches he had to be in the country from April 1, which he was, but also play four regular season matches.”

Lambie was part of the original Sharks squad, does that circumvent the 4 game clause then? From the above, it would seem to be the case….a faint glimmer of hope then it seems.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 178) : They should have made it that you can at least use your youth players as back up in a play-off without them having to play 4 games (Youth player = Player that is u21 and have been at the club since the start if current Super Rugby series)

  • Sharks were again pretty ppor from a teamplay perspective against the Sunwolves and again just relied on an individual to try and do something. Esterhuizen and Coenie were good on Friday night. And i thought JPP did nicely as captain…players looked more awake than under Beast and JPP was calm with the ref. Such a pity the Sharks cant play 80min like they did the first 7min. Again i point to fitness and conditioning…cant hide from the fact that the Sharks are slower to the breakdown and slower to get off the floor and their linespeed on defense is slower than the top teams. With Rhyno Smith not available i hope LeRoux will be fit to start or Bosch will have to- eish. Cant see Gold picking much different to his trusted team of Beast,Chilli,Coenie,Oosthuizen,Lewies,Daniel, DuPreez,Van Der Walt, Claasens, April, Mvovo, Esterhuizen, JPP, Odwa,LeRoux

  • The Sharks have not been amazing this year but they have been better than last year so improvement is good. Our defense was woeful last year and at least that is better this year and i have seen glimpses on attack of something positive- Esterhuizen passing as much as he did on Fri is just improvement enough for me. I also think that if the Sharks and Stormers had swapped places in the pools then the QF places would also have been reversed and the Sharks would have been at home with Stormers away. So yes it will be very very tough for the Sharks to beat the Canes but this year has been an improvement (without much boardroom level help) so think credit needs to be given there.

  • Side note: I see the Bulls are negotiating with Dan Du Plessis— do they really need another centre? Maybe Dan Kriel wants to come back home….

@SheldonK (Comment 180) : so they boys fly a long flight and only arrive Thu due to another SANZAAR booking cock up…If they show some lack of intensity it can be a long long morning on Saturday. Its playoffs so there should be no need for motivation, lets go boys

  • @SheldonK (Comment 182) : plus add a significantly less talented squad than last year. We all would have taken a playoff game ahead of Bulls (even without taking the chasm in level of teams faced into consideration) at the start of season. Lots and lots to improve but at least in the right direction

  • @Kabouter (Comment 183) : For a one off game arriving late isnt the worst thing as the players wont have much time to think about anything other than just playing so it takes their mind off of worrying about prep time and travel time etc. Its literally arrive and all stations go for the game. Also means they avoid the NZ media hyping up the Canes

  • @Kabouter (Comment 187) : Think of it this way, we can beat the canes we showed it previously, then if the Chiefs, Crusaders, and highlanders can pull it off, they will have the travel factor, then we will play the highlanders, the Chiefs and Crusaders will battle it out, and then we will be the better rested team of all 4 and have no long traveling schedule to get back to NZ, even if the Lions beat the Saders the Chiefs will play the Lions in SA and we will play the highlanders in NZ, if my calculations are correct
