Beast Mtawarira reclaims the captain’s armband for the Sharks this weekend, as Gary Gold has named a strong team to face the Hurricanes in Saturday’s Super Rugby quarter-final.

Wille le Roux and Paul Jordaan return at fullback and outside centre respectively, reuniting the backline line-up that formed a good understanding, particularly on defence, for much of the season. JP Pietersen is at right wing, with Lwazi Mvovo and Andre Esterhuizen retaining their respective berths at left wing and inside centre. Garth April continues at flyahlf, with Michael Claassens returning at scrumhalf for benched Stefan Ungerer.

The pack more-or-less selects itself. Franco Marais and Coenie Oosthuizen join Beast in the front row, with Stephan Lewies and Etienne Oosthuizen at lock. Jean-Luc du Preez returns at blindside flank, to join Keegan Daniel and Philip van der Walt in the loose trio.

A bench switch-up sees Thomas du Toit asked to cover tight head prop, with Dale Chadwick and Chiliboy Ralepelle the other front row men. Ruan Botha has presumably not been cleared to play, meaning Hyron Andrews joins Tera Mtembu as forward replacement. Ungerer will be alongside Curwin Bosch and Odwa Ndundange – two players with about 15 years’ difference in age between them – on the backline bench.

  • Forwards will determine this game! Pity about Ruan but nice firepower on bench.

We have a much better shot than most believe outside SW 😉

  • Surprised its Marais over Chilliboy and also in Botha’s omission but rest pretty much as expected. Interesting combo of players on the bench…most very mobile

  • This is not a kak side at all. Yes, we are underdogs, but I reckon we have a decent chance of taking this one. @Kabouter (Comment 2) : Yes!

  • @Another Nick (Comment 4) : If there is 1 New Zealand side that could very well fail to arrive on match day it is the Hurricanes…

  • Great that Jordaan and Willie are back. Hopefully especially Jordaan will be able to last a good portion of the match – he is going to have to put in a lot of tackles.

The forwards needs to get properly fired up for this one – they have been pretty disappointing since the break.

And Coenie’s arse needs to please forget about its love affair with the side lines.

I expect we will see a fairly defensive game plan – trying to strike from turnovers.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 3) : I think that one might come down to match fitness. After a couple of years off the likelyhood he isnt as fit as Marius. Manangement might feel they get better results out of Chilli as a supersub at the moment.

  • Best team we are allowed to put on the field. The forwards must have a massive game for us to beat them, and no silly penalties or cards please!

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 6) : In a knock out game,it will be our best chance to win. Think they will try and run it a bit if we get enough ball, but I am quite hopeful for saturday!

  • Pity about Botha in the lock position as I am liking his all round ability…Coenie for me is not cutting it in the front row right now..the rest ok

  • I know its still Super rugby and a lot still on the line but CC starts on 5 August so just 2 weeks away. Not much time for Rob DuPreez to put his spin on things. However looking at the super rugby side picked for this weekend i think only Beast, JPP, LeRoux and perhaps Mvovo would not be available for CC…

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 25) : haha dont tempt him…we need all of 9,10,12 and hope some others can fill in the rest. Could be very interesting to see who plays where.

  • @JD (Comment 27) : Indeed. Not sure all these guys are available but could be interesting to see: 9. Claasens 10. April. 11. Am 12. Esterhuizen 13. Sithole 14. Mjekevu 15. Smith. Bench: Ungerer, Bosch

  • @JD (Comment 32) : I couldnt agree more. These CC Qualifiers are 22 man teams

  • Comment 33, posted at 22.07.16 14:54:35 by SheldonK Reply

  • @JD (Comment 24) : He has been immense for kings. Wouldn’t mind at all. Other than that the lineup looks as good as can be expected. Hope Coenie plays hard again. If April gets shell shocked we should sub Bosch sooner we have nothing to lose the team did well considering the rebuild year.

  • Comment 34, posted at 22.07.16 17:18:10 by coolfusion Reply

  • @coolfusion (Comment 34) : both brothers has been good!
Coenie needs to concentrate at scrums to ensure he’s back stays straight!
Forwards needs to step up to make it a bit easier on April!
Going to be a very hard game but yes Sharks has less to lose so pressure will be on Canes.
