Few Bok losses for Sharks

With the Currie Cup kicking off on Friday, talk will inevitably be focused on which players from their Super Rugby squads the respective unions will need to replace; The Rugby Championship runs contiguously with the country’s provincial competition and we should expect that all contracted Bok players – as well as non-contracted players selected in Allister Coetzee’s squad – will this be unavailable.

Squad composition tends to be rather fluid and should, rightfully, reflect the form teams at the time of selection. While the Lions, as recently as last year, enjoyed an unbeaten Currie Cup season on the back of a Super Rugby strength squad, things are set to be radically different this time around, with at least ten of their first choice team highly likely for Bok call-ups this month. Coetzee will confirm his group for the first two Rugby Championship tests at the end of the week, after the Lions have played in the Super Rugby final, but has given a strong indication as to who else he is looking at already.

In naming a group of 18 players to attend a “rehabilitation and reconditioning camp” (which sounds like a Soviet era brainwashing exercise!), Coetzee has indicated which players from local tams other than hte Lions are likely to feature. The pickings are slim, of course, with the bulk of the form players this year playing out of Ellis Park. Looking at the Sharks in particular, we face a rather bleak reality in terms of just how far down the Bok pecking order we have fallen, given our list of departures and relatively poor form this year.

Only Patrick Lambie, Lwazi Mvovo, Beast Mtawarira and Coenie Oosthuizen have been summoned to this camp – leaving one to conclude that neither JP Pietersen nor Willie le Roux is available for Rugby Championship selection due to foreign commitments. Of those players, only the still-injured Lambie and Mtawarira could really be considered candidates for starting positions, with Mvovo having much ground to make up on his rivals after a poor June test series against Ireland.

Looking to the Currie Cup, it does mean that the Sharks could start that campaign in pretty good shape, with six of the eight forwards that started their Super Rugby quarter-final game in Wellington available for selection. The loss of Pietersen, le Roux, Mvovo and Paul Jordaan (to France) means that the back division will need to be largely rebuilt, however and with only a few days before the campaign opener against the Pumas, the challenge facing new head coach Robert du Preez is a formidable one.

Players invited to a Springbok rehabilitation and conditioning camp:

1.Damian de Allende (DHL Stormers)
2. Lood de Jager (Toyota Cheetahs)
3. Pieter-Steph du Toit (DHL Stormers)
4. Eben Etzebeth (DHL Stormers)
5. Vincent Koch (DHL Stormers)
6. Jesse Kriel (Vodacom Bulls)
7. Pat Lambie (Cell C Sharks)
8. Frans Malherbe (DHL Stormers)
9. Oupa Mohoje (Toyota Cheetahs)
10. Tendai Mtawarira (Cell C Sharks)
11. Lwazi Mvovo (Cell C Sharks)
12. Sikhumbuzo Notshe (DHL Stormers)
13. Trevor Nyakane (Vodacom Bulls)
14. Coenie Oosthuizen (Cell C Sharks)
15. Rudy Paige (Vodacom Bulls)
16. Handré Pollard (Vodacom Bulls)
17. Jan Serfontein (Vodacom Bulls)
18. Adriaan Strauss (Vodacom Bulls)

  • So with Jordaan gone, who will be playing 13 for us, seeing that that Baby Bok 13 only joining us from November? S’bu? And with Jp gone, Lwazi at the Boks, who other than S’bu can play wing?

This is a watershed moment in Sharks rugby where we have a golden opportunity to completely rebuild the team.starting with the captain,he should be someone for the future not someone from the past. The ginger ninja is my pick, build the pack around him , with the twins,Lewies,Botha and Thomas. Keep all those guys in play and In a years time we could have a formidable unit capable of winning anything.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 35) : Have you guys not been watching Keegan closely the last few games? Contrary to what the Hound likes to say, Keegan was brilliant in contesting and disrupting opposition ball at the breakdown. No other player in the Sharks setup at the moment can realistically challenge him for the 6 jersey.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 35) : There was a super rugby game in new zealand that Ginger played 6 and i was very impressed. Think he plays well to he ball and is very abrasive. Think Keegan Daniel just been outmuscled at 6, so if he plays id play him at 8 so he has more running freedom.

  • Comment 38, posted at 01.08.16 13:12:10 by SheldonK Reply

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 36) : I must admit i also have not seen him be effective at all. He gets bullied often at the breakdown. Keegans best play has been at 8 in my opinion.

  • @JD (Comment 42) : Lions rebirth can be traced to the moment Straus, the big bearded wonder threw his toys out the cot and headed for Scotland. Ackermann and I suspect Swys brainwave was to give the captaincy to Warren and start building the team around him.
We have that opportunity to rebirth, and I hope we don’t hitch our wagon to a couple of fading stars, who were great players but are past their sell by date.
