No Leopards…

There are a few red faces this morning, I’m sure, at the offices of mainstream media outlets that reported that the Leopards would play in the Currie Cup Premier Division this season. Jumping the gun somewhat, those publications appear to have missed the fact that a SARU President’s Council vote was needed to ratify the inclusion of the Potch-based side.

Last night’s vote went the way that only such votes can go, with one or two unnamed smaller union presidents voting to block the move. Self-interest, of course, came into the equation, but I for one cannot say I feel cheated by not having the country’s 10th-best team present in the top tier of what’s meant to be a strong competition.

The Currie Cup format – and let’s not forget that it all kicks off on Friday – is once again completely in the balance. SARU now look to have no option but to exclude the Kings and revert to an 8-team premier division. The fixture list will need to be hastily rejigged. All in all, not an ideal situation for anyone.

A possible silver lining for the Sharks is that Rhyno Smith may now be able to play Currie Cup for us after all, since the Leopards won’t be in the top flight themselves.

  • The news about Rhyno Smith possibly joining the Sharks for the CC is good news indeed; all respect to Odwa but he’s merely filling in at fullback. The last time the Sharks had a fullback who made me confident was Louis Ludick, and hopefully Curwin and Rhyno Smith can rock that position…I still feel morose about Lambie with persistent symptoms (surely lesser by now) after 8 weeks. My theory (which still needs testing) is that the year Lambie remains uninjured the Sharks will win SR ๐Ÿ˜€

  • I genuinely feel for the Kings though, utterly stuffed around by Cheeky Watson (and others like him).

  • Best outcome…when will we know for sure that the EP will be excluded? Wont the Leopards be using Smith in the 1st division?

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 7) : problem now is that the draw becomes completely unbalanced. I don’t want a bye instead of a home romp against the Kings. That means we play only 3 home games and 4 away games. Teams that had the Kings away benefit disproportionately.

  • How about two conferences with 4 teams each, home and away fixtures, top two from each conference to semi finals, first conference a hosts second conference b and first conference b host second conference a. Team with best record hosts final. Not ideal since you don’t play any teams in the other conference, but American baseball survived for decades with no inter-league play between the American and National leagues, except for the final (World Series).

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) : @Dancing Bear (Comment 9) : with only 8 teams some will play more away than home.
Fact is SA have to many teams in Super rugby. This has now resulted in this overloaded Currie cup with teams that would not be in a top competition!!!

  • @robdylan (Comment 13) : no sponsor / partner has come forward so no real hope. A few have made claims that funding is available if Cheeky steps down but lets see if any late night dealings made tonight. No real hope locally as all attention on Elections and a hope the DA takes over – would maybe open a door for delay as new municipality could step in, all in all just whishful thinking going around and almost certainty liq will succeed. sad sad

  • @Kabouter (Comment 14) : It is what happens when you’re gifted an opportunity, without showing through their results that they deserved it.

Their promotion should have been motivated by results, not the hope/dream/promise that all the local talent will translate into a fairytale success story.

They were wangled into SR and CC-Prem in the boardroom, and it’s there that they ended up failing.

If you want to play with the big boys, you have to EARN the right to do so.

  • What is the deal with Rhyno Smith? Is he a loan player? Partly signed player? Only in case of emergencies? They either need to sign him outright or forget him and invest in the guys we have. 8 teams does make for a more balanced competition.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 17) : he’s currently a loan player. Contracted to the Leopards but it seems there’s a deal that allows him to play for the Sharks. Seems the Leopards would be prepared to let him play Premier Division for the Sharks, but only if they themselves are not in the Premier Division.

  • @robdylan (Comment 19) : So slightly complicated then. I just feel that the Sharks either need to sign him outright or forget him and focus on those we have. Having in come in and out does not help with continuity and morale of those fulltime at the Union.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 20) : watch this space.

Look, Rhyno is a player that Rob clearly rates very highly. And I can see why, because he’s been a regular stand out at every level he’s played. The Sharks clearly want him, but he already has a contract with the Leopards lasting until the end of October. So my feeling is they know he’s part of their plans going forward and are doing everything they can to accelerate that process.

  • @robdylan (Comment 21) : Yeh look ive rated the guy highly for a while now, think he would add a lot to this Sharks team. So if the plan is to get him fulltime then fair enough. But if its going to continue with this loan thing then think they should rather forget it. Hate to say it but Lambie’s future doesnt look that good so getting a player like Smith on our books is very good business.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 22) : Smith,April,Bosch,three very similar players,do we need all three.
My feeling is we have a need for two of them at the most the third one is going to get no game time, and is going to do a Shimange on the bench.
We should pick two and look to cultivate another physical backline player like Esterhuizen.
Which one to drop probably Smith

  • Comment 25, posted at 04.08.16 10:32:51 by John Reply

  • @The hound (Comment 23) : I think there is a need for 3 but there are actually 4 of them. Radebe, Bosch, April and then Smith. 2 will start with 1 covering the bench. So that only leaves 1 out assuming none are injured. Yes Lambie may also come into the picture but at this stage his return is not looking too optimistic. So i would say we need all 4. I think Esterhuizen and Am can actually do the same role so will be interesting to see how they combine together. Sharks need to look at securing some more centres though.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 32) : Yeh look he isnt my personal choice of the type of player i like at 12 but i can admit that there is more than 1 way to play. He does seem by far the Sharks best option at 12 currently. I do agree with you that i would like to see him develop his skillset more- especially a grubber/chipkick as well as offload in the tackle. he is still fairly young so i am hoping he will develop…as there really isnt too much else
