A big well done to Independent Media’s Darryn Pollock for getting to the bottom of the Pat Lambie concussion situation in an article this morning.
Sharks and Bok fans alike were left feeling rather worried about the 25-year-old’s future, as a medical report released a week back indicated that he was still experiencing headaches a good two months after suffering concussion. While nothing was said openly at the time, it must have been a huge source of concern to both the player and the medical staff that these symptoms continued far longer than would have been expected.
Without repeating the content of Pollock’s article here, the gist that Alan Kourie has had a breakthrough and realised that Lambie’s headaches are not, in fact symptoms of the concussion, but are rather an exacerbation of an existing condition. Lambie is a migraine sufferer and something called post-concussion syndrome appears to have aggravated those headaches. The good news, though, is that there’s a protocol for dealing with and treating this condition, now that it’s been correctly diagnosed and Lambie will, I’m sure, return to the rugby field once that protocol has been followed.
There’s still not an actual date on a calendar for a return to play, but I understand that everyone is feeling a lot better now and know that Pat returning to the game is definitely a matter of “when”, not “if”.

good news ! great stuff
Sho im impressed they got that diagnosed as i can imagine how tricky it must have been. Hoping to see him back in training and playing fairly soon then. Playing a good few CC games would definitely be good for him.
GREAT news!! And a BIG well done to Alan for the breakthrough. Looking forward to having our cappie back on the field again soon!! 😛 😛
Good news indeed.
Rob, apologies if I’m hijacking the thread. Are you planning on giving your thoughts on the John Smit ‘exit’ interview?
Very good news , this was also a chance for pats body to really get rested so he will be a bit rusty but very fresh
@vanmartin (Comment 4) : yeah, once I manage to get my gag reflex under control 🙂 Maybe a Monday piece.
@robdylan (Comment 6) : 😀
@vanmartin (Comment 7) : you know what i mean?
@robdylan (Comment 8) : Think its best you do it now 😉 Think we all itching for this topic
Great News !!!
@Uli Boelie (Comment 9) : i second that! 😉
@robdylan (Comment 8) : I do. The gag reflex is strong with this one.
Maybe this time off will help us as he can play a bit of end of year tour and then have a full pre season with us. And be ready for SR.
My feeling is we need to setup our team for SR as best we can to make good use of the fact that we play ozzie teams.
Bit concerned about openside for SR, Love keags but not sure if he can perform at SR level consistently over a long season.
I rate khaya Majola as he had a great start to CC 2015 but got injured and hasn’t really hit though heights yet this year. But hey the kid can play so lets give him a chance Rob
Great news about Pat, was really starting to get worried.
@Uli Boelie (Comment 9) : haha – work is getting in the way today
Wow, lets hope this is all correct and sound advice, its great news for Pat.
@robdylan (Comment 15) : good news indeed!!!
This is really great news! 😀 😀
Speaking as a non-medical professional, why in the world did it take them this long to find out that headaches suffered from time to time by a lifetime migraine sufferer may, just perhaps have nothing to do with the concussion after all??????? I get a headache from time to time, always have, and I’m not even a migraine sufferer…eish I don’t get this.
I was just thinking about this today. Very glad Pat is ok. Now for his road back and taking his rightful spot as nr1 sharks and springbok flyhalf.
