Three from three for Sharks

The Sharks have scored a bonus point 41-20 Currie Cup win over the Boland Cavaliers in Wellington.

As was the case last week, the Sharks started well, wrapping up a bonus point for four tries scored before half time. Odwa Ndungane scored the first, finishing off well on the right wing after strong work by the pack; the second score was a real beauty to Inny Radebe, who profited after a brilliant break from Ndungane. Boland fullback Nico Scheepers narrowed the gap via a penalty, but the torture started all voer again soon after, with Andre Esterhuizen powering over for a third. Chiliboy Ralepelle scored from close range for the fourth just before the break and with everything going there way, it was a big 29-3 half time advantage for the Sharks.

There’s always been a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde feel to this team, though and it must be said that the Sharks were poor in the second period. As replacements came on, continuity and urgency was lost and Boland started to make far more progress with ball in hand. Veteran Danwel Demas scored their first, after a defensive lapse from Ndungane. Sergio Torrens scored a carbon copy on the other wing some minutes later and it took a fantastic bit of quick play for the Sharks to get back into the half. Replacement Hanco Venter took a quick tap from a penalty and then took the pass back from Heimar Williams after Keegan Daniel had made the break. A sixth try went to Franco Marais off the back of a rolling maul, but the Sharks again went to sleep to allow Boland captain Ryan Nell in for a consolation score right at the end.

The Sharks will be happy with the log points, but will ultimately not feel too content in the way they played on the day; captain Keegan Daniel summed it up rather well post match, noting that “we set ourselves high standards and didn’t live up to them. We won’t win the competition playing like that.”

Boland (20): Tries Demas, Torrens, Nell. Penalty Scheepers. Conversion Kotze.
Sharks (41): Tries Ndungane, Radebe, Esterhuizen, Ralepelle, Venter, Marais. Conversions Bosch (3), April. Penalty Bosch

  • Shit guys a bonus point win away what else do you want.Inny and Esterhuzien great games.
Jean Deysel seriously depressed ,me when he came on,played that old slow brutal game with two left feet for hands.
He either dropped everything that came his way or gave away penalties
Lets hope we are past that way of playing and when we get the twins back again,we never revert to this style again.

  • Rob got to stretch some legs and the team still came away with a good score and a bonus. All and all a good outing. Well done boys now have a good rest. I am chomping at the bit to see Pat Lambie and Bosch on an the same time with Esterhuizen looking good too and mvovo. Only thing that would complete this would have been to have Jordaan still with us.

  • @The hound (Comment 2) : @The hound (Comment 4) : must say Inny is really looking good as for Deysel he seemed to try to hard. He tried some silly offloads today much like Keegan did but he’s just did not work. Maybe he’s feeling the pressure as he knows there’s lots of youngsters pushing hard for Super rugby spots.
By the way how good is Keegan looking under RdP!!!

  • @benji (Comment 12) : @coolfusion (Comment 13) : @Ben (Comment 14) : no smoke blowing but the Sharks have 15 log points out of a possible 15!!! Yes they have not played the “big” teams yet but they are looking good and beat two teams they had a real bad habit of losing to!!!

  • Solid win. Of course there were areas for improvement but we wrapped it up nicely with a young team.

I think we need to give Radebe a bit more freedom at 10 now – I feel some of the loss of shape on attack is simply the 10 not being assertive enough. Bit worried by what I saw from Deysel and Williams – not up to standard on the day.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 17) : think you’re spot on. Must say Deysel was a lot better last week. Think he was trying a bit hard tonight might be feeling some pressure from the youngsters?!

  • Yes, we’ve only played the small unions and yes they all haven’t been complete performances but in years gone by the team would have fallen asleep at some point and either lost a game or not secured the bonus point. We’ve taken every available point we can and that is something I’m proud of. Well done Sharks, keep dominating.

  • I think that was the worst I’ve ever seen Deysel play. First touch penalty, worse defense than Esterhuizen, losing balls in the tackle, poor attempts at passing, nowhere in advantage line dominance, etc. all against a team like Boland. Tera’s injury made a huge difference to our effectiveness.

  • Had fun traveling to the game with the Sharks supporter club.

Meeting all the player and staff, and interacting with rugby fans from all over. Even got a chance to chat and take pics with the oke from supersport that do the khosa commentary.

Yah Deysels a nice oke, but he had a nightmare game from the bench. I hope terra is ok cause he seemed down after the game compared to the other players. And he was way more effective when on. If Terra is out for awhile at least we have JLDP back next week, and Dan back in a month or so, majola and klianhans cover openside.

Keagan is such a nice oke, he had endless patients with people and took pics with tons of us with a smile all along.

Great time in wellington, people there really know their rugby.

  • I don’t want to sound negative after what was all in all a very good game, but we need to start looking for alternative SH’s. Ungerer was our weak link today, he had a terrible game IMO. We seem well stocked in the FH department now with Inny showing how good he can become. He had an excellent game and so did AE. Keegan just makes me proud with the commitment and determination he is playing with, setting a real good example for the youngsters, he is an awesome captain!

  • @John (Comment 25) : AB’s giving the Aussies a hiding at home. Boks, Oz and Pumas will have to fight for second place again this year.

  • Fully agree with you @Quintin…I said the same last week. One thing, the Sharks should steal that Boland, skilled and fast….and young.

  • Solid performance from the Sharks…scrappy 2nd half but can be expected considering playing Boland and game was pretty much won by half time so the subs disrupted things a bit. But think we can feel pretty satisfied. I mean it could be worse…could be Lions in Kimberly 😉
