Former Shark Hargreaves forced out of the game

There’s some sad news from London today, with the confirmation that former Sharks lock forward Alistair Hargreaves – now playing for Saracens – has been forced to retire from professional rugby.

Hargreaves has suffered a number of concussions over the last two years and has decided to follow medical advice and stop playing as a result, rather than risk his long term health. We are hearing more and more stories about the serious impact of head knocks in the sport, with the Pat Lambie incident earlier in the year bringing the topic sharply into focus.

World Rugby is taking the management and treatment of concussion far more seriously now, which is a good thing and it’s thanks, in part, to this new policy that Hargreaves has made the sensible decision to call it a day. “It’s been a very tough decision to make. I’ve suffered a number of concussions in the last two seasons and after seeking medical advice I’ve come to the conclusion that the risk is outweighing the reward,” Hargreaves told ESPN. “I have a young family, I have to make decisions that are right by them and although this was a hard decision for me personally it’s one that I feel is the right one to make.”

We’d like to wish Ali and his family all the best for the future.

  • Al to spend his full time making his Wolfpack lager now. A very talented player that probably didnt achieve his true full potential due to injuries. All the best to him

  • So sad saw him and Brad Barritt at DPHS as junior school boys and they both had Bok written all over them.Allie was an amazing cricketer and could have made the Proteas.
Always felt that he was given no respect at the Sharks, considering that he was a WC winning captain,he and Brad couldn’t get out of town fast enough.

  • @The hound (Comment 5) : if memory service me right he was deemed to “light” and needed to “bulk up”.
Must say of the current players Andrews reminds me a lot of him.

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : Rob like I mentioned I remember something about him being to light. They (not sure if it was Plum) wanted him to “bulk up”.

  • @JD (Comment 8) : I think it was more about discipline and attitude, at the time.
