Stormers flyhalf Robert du Preez Junior has been handed the all-important flyhalf jersey as former Wallaby coach Robbie Deans names his Barbarians side to face the Springboks at Wembley on Saturday.

Du Preez joins fellow South African Super Rugby players Martin Muller and Akker van der Merwe, both from the Lions, in a starting team that will be lead by veteran Crusaders scrumhalf Andy Ellis. Further South African flavour in the pack comes in the form of Hurricanes prop Reg Goodes, who starts at loosehead.

Deans has named Kings-bound prop Schalk van der Merwe and Lions loosie Ruan Ackerman on his bench.

Barbarians: 15 Melani Nanai, 14 Matt Faddes, 13 Seta Tamanivalu, 12 Richard Buckman, 11 Taqele Naiyaravoro, 10 Robert du Preez, 9 Andy Ellis (captain), 8 Luke Whitelock, 7 Jordan Taufua, 6 Brad Shields, 5 Michael Fatialofa, 4 Martin Muller, 3 Paddy Ryan, 2 Armand van der Merwe, 1 Reggie Goodes.
Replacements: 16 Andrew Ready, 17 Schalk van der Merwe, 18 Toby Smith, 19 Sam Carter, 20 Ruan Ackermann, 21 Nic Stirzaker, 22 Richard Mo’unga, 23 Luke Morahan.

  • Strong team! I think the Boks are in for a tough game! No real fetcher in the team so maybe the Boks can exploit that.

  • Hmm no room for Kwagga Smith and Clayton Blommetjies i see. Hope they get a free ticket to the game at least. Still a very useful side on paper but in truth they are more just good super rugby players than anything.

  • Technically that headline is misleading as Ellis is the captain and as such will lead the charge. πŸ˜† πŸ˜†

  • Does Reggie Goodes qualify to play for SA? And if so do we reckon he is good enough to be picked?

  • @SheldonK (Comment 8) : πŸ˜† πŸ˜† πŸ˜† πŸ˜† πŸ˜† πŸ˜† πŸ˜† With the body shape Goode has developed as of late, discussion of tights should not be allowed in a thread he is mentioned in.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 11) : πŸ˜† πŸ˜† The only Goodes he has is his sense of humour. That guy is hilarious, and the banter between him and Wayne Barnes has me rolling on the floor. Hearing him try to convince Barnes he had the winger for pace and would have beaten him was hilarious, including Barnes response.
