The Springboks kick off their European tour at Wembley with a young team taking on the ever entertaining Barbarians. Kick off is at 17h00.

Interesting head to heads include a Lions hooker-off as Akker van der Merwe and Malcolm Marx face off in an early Lions front row trial. The combination on everybody’s lips is that in midfield though, where Rohan Janse van Rensburg and Francois Venter combine for what is likely to be the most exciting centre combination of the year.

Robert du Preez and Martin Muller also geta chance to show their skills for the Barbarians, with Ruan Ackermann set to show his class in the later stages of the game.

  • Personally I think things picked up a bit with van zyl giving much quicker service and allowing the backline to move up quicker. Page is a slouch. I didn’t think van zyl should be there but he is quicker and we needed that. The allowed turnovers was also completely unacceptable from our side.

  • interesting game

not only petersen struggled to tackle the big ozzy winger, just Bought every back line player

it was a bad miss match either way, cause petersen smoked him on attack, but we did a poor job putting petersen in that situation on attack.

could we not have swooped wings ? jamba had a better chance of slowing him down.

jamba had a good game, along with carr and mahoja

jvr did look really good though, so composed, great under the high ball, nice feet with the try. another disgard from the bulls thats blossomed

    venter did ok

jldp didnt really havd much time to make a impact. trevor was good as usual

I guess it was a good exercise in giving young players a go

lambie took some serious hits during the game

going to be tough against england

  • @Ben (Comment 28) : Yuba te both right his decision making has been good but position ally he hasn’t shown too much individual brilliance. He has only been back from injury a short while so we can give him that. Rust is difficult to shake after a half year layoff.

  • Paige was shown up again. There was good and bad, unfortunately the bad was all defense and we had the wrong Pietersen on the wing. The good was we didnt lose but it was definitely there for us to take.

  • @Sharkfinn (Comment 36) : Good was also that we see what our Centre pair should be and that Combrinck was a lot more valuable than kriel. If we had Faf at scrumhalf we may have seen a lot more from the backs. I agree Paige is not the man for the job.

Jamba Ulengo is staying on with the Boks as possible injury cover for Ruan Combrinck, Willie le roux and JPP. Le Roux and JPP have niggles that must still be evaluated

  • There were a couple of patches that gave a glimmer of hope but overall it was another poor Bok performance. How can an international side have so little possession against a phone in side with at best decent super rugby players. Our loose trio as non existent and it seemed like very man for himself in the forward pack with very little cohesion. Our defense is just woeful…how many defensive coaches are we going to go through before we realise its the players that cant tackle. Sergeal Pieterson confirming to all SA school coaches why bigger is better…he got abused

  • Comment 50, posted at 07.11.16 08:06:08 by SheldonK Reply
  • @SheldonK (Comment 50) : If you drop passes and get bullied at the breakdown, you will always struggle to dominate possession. At least the Boks played the match in a positive spirit, and there was virtually no aimless kicking.

Losing a guy like Ritchie Gray from the Bok setup was a huge mistake – the Bok breakdown work is now worse than it was under HM.

  • Comment 51, posted at 07.11.16 09:04:09 by Bokhoring Reply
  • @Bokhoring (Comment 51) : I agree with you…we just cant keep the ball as a result of dropped passes and turnovers in the tackle. There was a lot of positive intent as you say as thats the glimmer of hope i was referring to. But with so many errors and that defense it kinda overshadows the glimmer of hope

Handrich ( 😯 ) Pollard at some stage single handedly beat the All Blacks. I dont remember this and more relevant currently is that Eben Etsebeth is off the Bristol after the EOYT, Apparently its not official yet but the guy just couldnt help himself.

  • Comment 60, posted at 07.11.16 11:43:25 by SheldonK Reply
  • @SheldonK (Comment 60) : But maybe they wil,l and maybe its us (the Boks and the Stormers) that are/ have been getting the player who is playing within himself knowing that no play in Bristol means no pay.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 61) : I think its the opposite effect actually. He knows that he has to play to get paid…so going full out and risking injury and no pay could mean he holds back every game just to make the next game/payday. If you want to see players perform develop Key Performance stats and if they hit those they get X amount, below that a different amount etc.

  • Comment 62, posted at 07.11.16 12:02:44 by SheldonK Reply
  • @SheldonK (Comment 62) : Fair enough, but if he had signed this contract 3 months ago that performance bonus wouldnt kick in until he runs onto the field in Bristol colours, hence my view that he could be playing within himself until he dons the jersey that makes him a very wealthy man, which wont happen if he pitches up knackered and doesnt make the starting line up.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 65) : Yes but even if its a year contract or so…being injured and not playing could mean no renewal and next guy in. I see the value that the overseas guys bring but as of right now and the next year or two i think the Boks should only pick local in order to crate a good base and some continuity

  • @SheldonK (Comment 68) : For me there should only be one rule, pick the best man in the position, no matter where he is playing. Its a national team and only the best should play.Restricting players because they are playing off shore is as bad as restricting players because of their ethnicinty, colour or religion. The Books will only be great again when only the best put on that jersey.

  • @The hound (Comment 69) : Im fully behind only picking the best. But how do you judge that over different competitions played at different times. Is Catrakilis playing well at 10 in France then better than say Lambie doing fairly well in Super rugby? Or do we base it on historic performances? If we do then are we not considering current form? So yes picking only the best should be the criteria but judging that becomes very tricky

  • @The hound (Comment 71) : But thats why im saying only local guys should be picked as then can see who is the best based on the same competition and opposition etc. Dont get me wrong, there are a lot of quality players overseas but the access to them and comparing them to local guys performances makes the Bok coaches life very difficult

  • Comment 72, posted at 07.11.16 14:25:55 by SheldonK Reply
  • @The hound (Comment 71) : I think we can both name a very strong purely overseas based team…but think a lot of those names would be on reputation not form. Having these overseas based players pretty much means the 2 weeks spent in camp in jhb was pointless as more than half the team wasnt there.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 66) : Im strongly in the “only pick local” camp. I might feel otherwise if we selected the best foreigners available but that does not happen so Im happy to stick with picking on form locals that are hungry to play for the Boks.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 74) : Look i currrently feel picking only local players is whats needed to get stability and continuity in the Boks. However if we are going to pick overseas based guys then they need to report to the same camps as the local guys etc. No use having camps etc when majority of the side picked on match days arent there.

  • Comment 75, posted at 07.11.16 14:55:51 by SheldonK Reply
  • @SheldonK (Comment 73) : I think you are wrong because already the best SA players are not playing in the Currie Cup or Super Rugby, you could probably pick an S.A team based in the U.K ,one based in France and another one based in Japan that would, come close to beating the shite out of one totally local based.
Robbie Deans took one week to put together a team from all over the world that nearly did that, and he was clever enough to unearth a few South Africans from under Alistar’s nose that put our players to shame. Our selectors should be able to monitor all the overseas based players and they are worthy of their title selector.put together a team of the 15 best players who qualify to wear the green and gold.

    Bench: 16. Smith 17. Mbonambi 18. DuToit 19. Snyman 20. Cassiem 21. Reinach 22. Pollard 23. Esterhuizen

  • @The hound (Comment 79) : Well see now thats the other side of the coin and we only pick overseas based guys then as we assume the best play overseas. So pretty much like most African football sides- for big tournaments and games they only pick foreign based players that arrive a couple days before the game. It does mean that continuity and bringing players through gets thrown out the window though.

  • @The hound (Comment 86) : Still in Japan as far as i know. I remember seeing an article about him where he says he would love to play fro the Boks but he knows being 30+ and in Jap counts against him.

  • @The hound (Comment 86) : @SheldonK (Comment 87) : short memories guys?!?!?! Bekker averaged even more hours on the medical bench than PSDT! Whilst playing in SA it almost seemed as if he was made of glass!

  • @The hound (Comment 93) : Alberts would be Godzilla. Bekker is more like Inspector Gadget.

  • @JD (Comment 95) : You are correct he was injury prone. Would be interesting to see how he has fared in Japan injury wise. We seem to be ‘good’ at injury rehab in SA, Durban particularly…but how good are we at actually conditioning guys to prevent injuries? Interesting thought…although tough to measure due to the contact nature of the sport

  • @JD (Comment 96) : Bekker was as badly managed asFrans Steyn, when he was on song he was magnificent totally un playable.Imagine how good Bekker and Frans would have been if they were born in New Zealand. It is such a disgrace that two mighty talents like that are not even in consideration for the Bok squad and both are still playing.
