It’s that time of the year again, time to haul out the Bok jersey and, after the recent performances against the All Blacks, we can do this with pride. […]

June Internationals: South Africa v England
The first true test for new coach Rassie Erasmus, a full squad of the best players available to him and no excuses about travel or fatigue. It’s the first of three opportunities to get further insight into the workings of the new regime. Let’s hope it’s a positive start. […]

Last Exit to Bronkhorstspruit Vol. 6: “Don’t Worry, Be Happy (a.k.a. ode to the whinelands)” – with apologies to Bobby McFerrin
Normally I don’t like to indulge in schadenfreude (much), but the amount of negative press surrounding the Sharks’ win over the weekend has forced my hand. Sure, the penalty try was contentious, but it’s not like it’s the first time that has ever happened. You win some, you lose some. The fact remains, in my eyes (which are admittedly not entirely free from bias), the Sharks were in the ascendancy for most of the game, winning the set pieces, bossing the collisions, and playing the moments that mattered better. So here’s a little light-hearted response to the naysayers out there. […]

Jones walks out on Stormers
New Stormers coach Eddie Jones has proved to be not quite as “in love with Tabletop Mountain” as he claimed to be just a week or two ago; the mastermind behind Japan’s stunning World Cup victory over the Springboks was today confirmed as England’s new coach, on a four-year deal that will see him leave the Cape franchise before ever having overseen a game. […]

A thin line
There is a thin line between coaching and controlling. Having done a bit of schools coaching (and not at any high level I will readily admit), I know what worked for me. Man management, choosing the best players for each position and getting them fit and motivated, and getting them to play to a game plan based on our strengths, but allowing them the freedom to play the game as they saw it i.e. adapt to the opposition and alter their play accordingly. […]

Future Bok Coach Musings
