It’s Tuesday and in the absence of much news, it’s time for my weekly rant. It’s about the Sharks, of course and it’s about a couple of home truths that we all seem to have completely forgotten in the light of some ultimately meaningless pre-season “good news”. […]

Lambie concern for Sharks

Defeat: not an option
While it’s unfortunately true that most, if not all, Sharks fans have already consigned Super Rugby 2013 to the scrap heap, if talk coming out of the camp is to be believed, the Sharks team themselves have done no such thing. Fighting words about desperate last chances seem to be the order of the day and the players, at least, have set their sights on doing everything within their power to grab an unlikely play-off spot. […]

Plenty loosies – fewer centres
The Sharks look set to be bolstered by a host of returning Boks ahead of this weekend’s Super Rugby clash with the Blues at Kings Park. While their options in the loose trio are set to expand rapidly, depth concerns in midfield and the second row continue to confound selection. […]
Smit starts smartly

Sharks hoping to use Lambie
It seems it’s not just me who wants Pat Lambie to play Currie Cup this weekend; in an interview yesterday, Sharks coach Grant Bashford confirmed that the union is hopeful that the under-used Bok back will be released to play against the Cheetahs, given his lack of game time for the Boks. […]
Plum’s “indefinite” break is definitely temporary
Talk about injudicious word choice setting tongues a-wagging and rugby fans a-panicking! Our friends at SuperSport certainly managed to twist a fair few pairs of panties yesterday by announcing that Sharks coach john Plumtree would be taking an “indefinite” break from the sport. […]
Bresler and McLeod given a rest
With Super Rugby 2012 done and dusted, coaches and players alike have not even had a moment to take a breath; the Currie Cup starts this Friday with not even a weekend’s rest for those of us who managed to reach the final of Super Rugby. […]
Sharks add skills to pre-season agenda
Sharks assistant coach Grant Bashford, in an interview with the Sharks website, has revealed that the team has been working a lot more on skills over the last two weeks than was the case at a similar stage in last year’s pre-season training program. […]
The Utopian Ideal
With the Currie Cup looming, and the bitter taste from the Super 15 still lingering like the memory of a surprise SARS audit, I decided to, in the spirit of scientific enquiry, revisit the parallel world (henceforth referred to as Utopia) I encountered a few weeks ago* to see what the alternative Sharks were up to. I must say, even though I knew it had worked before, I don’t mind telling you that it was with some trepidation that I stood once again on the brink of the vat of liquid lysergic acid diethylamide, plugged-in toaster clutched tightly to my chest, preparing to jump… But, as you can see from the fact that you’re reading this article, I escaped the ordeal more or les unscathed bar for some distortion and a certain brightness of colour affecting my peripheral vision. The necessary price to pay in the pursuit of knowledge, I guess. […]
Looking forward…
Sharks coach John Plumtree gave us a glimpse into his thinking for the future after the fantastic win in the Currie Cup, being the continuation of the current plan, which is to keep the ball in hand and take the game to the opposition. […]
Sharks gave a glimpse of the future
Perfect it was not, but the Sharks gave a glimpse of what can be expected of them in this year’s Curie Cup competition. […]
