Swys de Bruin’s Lions side to face the Sharks in Currie Cup action on Saturday is devoid of front-line Super Rugby players, but nevertheless contains a decent amount of experience, showcasing the depth available to the union. The Sharks, facing their third game in 8 days, will need to dig deep if they’re going to (finally) taste victory in Johannesburg. […]

Lions show their depth
A Loftus hoodoo – or a Bulls hoodoo?
As Sharks fans, we tend to have a rosy notion about Loftus Versveld being a happy hunting ground for our team and while this may be the case in Currie Cup rugby, looking at the history between the Sharks and Bulls in Super Rugby, nothing could be further from the truth. […]
A Foreign Affair
After reading an article about rugby professionals leaving their country of birth to play for an adopted country, whether through residency or ancestral lineage, and how it’s diluting the game, I decided to put down some of my own thoughts. […]
What are your suggestions to John Smit for the Shark Tank?
A couple of weeks ago the Sharks played their Currie Cup semi-final match against the Cheetahs in front of a near empty GROWTHPOINT KINGS PARK stadium. Maybe this was not the most successful season the boys have had in recent years, but it certainly also was not the worst season that they have had in recent memory either. The 8th position the Sharks managed on the Super Rugby log, missing out on a play-off position, was the worst the Sharks have done since 2010 when they ended 9th on the log, but that year the Sharks also had stadium attendance of over 35 000 for the semi-final against the Bulls (in torrential rain) and were at just about full capacity for the for the final against Western Province. And this was a mere 3 years ago. […]
Bulls now fly the SA flag
New Zealand are guaranteed a team in the Super Rugby final next weekend, after the Cheetahs and Reds lost out in qualifier action over the weekend. […]
Where to from here?
The Springboks are gearing up to face the Azzurri on Saturday, but before we put our Sharks jerseys way back in our cupboard, let’s have a look at the Super Rugby season thus far to see where we can possibly go from here. […]
The enigma that is Plum
Whilst being one of many voices calling for John Plumtree to be fired I have been thinking a lot about what Plum has done for the Sharks. Let’s take a look at exactly what Plum has done for our beloved Sharks: […]
Third time lucky for Daniel?
Sharks captain Keegan Daniel, along with the rest of the squad, will be hoping to pick up his third Currie Cup winners’ medal (or rather beer mug) in just five years on Saturday, when his side faces Western Province in the final of the South African domestic showpiece. The skipper, however, has his eyes set on a far more significant achievement. […]
Keep it steady, Sharks
Man, there’s been a lot of talk in the build-up to this week’s clash between the Sharks and the Blue Bulls – I must say, I’ve found it pretty hard to avoid wading right into the middle of it and fighting fire with fire. […]
Time for tough choices as Sharks eye title
It’s not often one is given a shot at redemption, but for the Sharks, it’s starting to look like they could assuage the disappointment of losing the Super Rugby final this year by at least, hopefully, winning the Currie Cup. […]
Sharks hoping for Pietersen boost
In what can only be described as truly excellent news for the Sharks, Bok wing JP Pietersen returned to training this week, after spending all of the Currie Cup season to date on the sidelines. Pietersen broke his thumb during the Sharks’ Super Rugby Final defeat to the Chiefs earlier in the year. […]
Plum gets Sykes, but really wants Lambie
There’s been further good news for Sharks coach John Plumtree ahead of Saturday’s Currie Cup clash in Johannesburg, with lock forward Steven Sykes cleared to return to the side after two weeks out with a rib injury. […]
Improved forward showing key to Loftus success
While all and sundry are talking up the Sharks’ chances of strolling to a third Currie Cup title in five years, I must admit that I’m a little more circumspect about their prospects, given the showing in the first two rounds. […]
Plum’s “indefinite” break is definitely temporary
Talk about injudicious word choice setting tongues a-wagging and rugby fans a-panicking! Our friends at SuperSport certainly managed to twist a fair few pairs of panties yesterday by announcing that Sharks coach john Plumtree would be taking an “indefinite” break from the sport. […]
